Second, Resolved that the growth and increase of these social agitators who are deliberately secking to un- dermine our institutions and govern- ment, is a matter of the/most vital concern to every member of the Am- erican Legion. ) ‘Third: We therefore resolve that ee eo *|'the action of the. CAR EPOCH “Racing is the crucible that has brought about the present perfection of the motor car,” declared R: B.,Lou- ek, today. “Almost every advance- ment of the designer’s art has come from the experience gained through speed and endurance contests, “The quick detachable rim, the use of special steels to obtain lightness and the building of stream-line bodies to decrease wind resistance, are ex amples of some of the many advance. ments which have come from the les- sons learned in racing which have benefited every motorist. “At this. year’s Indianapolis race, for ‘instance, the size of the motors was cut almost in half and yet these cars proved their ability to out-per- form the larger engines if other years, The smaller engines cut the pit stops’ in half and, as a result, the average miles per hour was greater than last year when the cars made*106 stops at the pits. This year only 58-‘stops were made. nl ; “The lesson is plain and it is that’ mere size can no longer be taken as a criterion of motor car performance. To the motor car users it means the coming of an era of ‘lighter cars of greater performance, of more depend- ability and of superior economy. “The Indianapolis race only served to drive home the lesson already taught by the achievements of the Essex. Although the motor of the Essex is actually smaller than those used at Indianapolis, its wonderful performance was shown on the Cin- cinnati speedway when it set a \new world’s long distance endurance mark by averaging more than 60 miles an hour for 50 pours daring which time it’ covered 3037 miles. ¢ “and the Essex which did this was a stock car in every particular and had to-contend against the worst pos- sible weather conditions. car, Good write Box q-1-1wk FOR SALE—Dodge touring condition, ‘Call 24 or 168.7 i Matches Veontaining white phos- phorus are prohibited in Belgium. “ Deaths in the United States, have been calculated at 67:a minute, and births at 70 ajminute. : EXTRAVAGANCE - has 44 gone by the board.'
