E PAGE FOUR “BISMARCK DAILY TRIBUNE SATURDAY, JUNE. 26, 1920. THE. BISMARCK TRIBUNE CASE OF NORTH DAKOTA AGAINST TOWNLEY Townley should be defeated June 30 on many counts. Four years ago through deception he rode into power by stealing the Republican organization and exploiting it for socialistic purposes. He has suppressed free government in North Dakota through the operation of a secret caucus and by the misrule of an arrogant ring of bureaucrats. ‘ As fdr as he has dared he has suppressed a free press through forced legal subsidies to news- papers who voice his principles of socialism, bolshevism and communism. His Americanism does not ring true. The attitude of Lynn J. Frazier, Townley’s puppet, to- ward Kate Richards O’Hare is enough to relegate him and his whole tribe of carpet’ baggers to political oblivion. He deserves defeat because he costs too much in taxes. There have been no benefits from his regime, which could warrant such excessive increases in the tax levy. If he is continued in power the deficits to be met by:the taxpayers stagger the imagination. In his wake have followed unprincipled promoters who have preyed upon the farmers. Banks, newspapers and stores have been organized with farmers’ money, but those who have given freely of their earnings have had little or no voice in the management of these enterprises in which Townley’s favorites have held the whip hand. The greed of the exploiters is a matter of history. Townley should be repudiated decisively next Wednesday on another count. During the last regular session of the legislature when Senator Mees and other league legislators protested against the vicious tax schemes of Townley, andasked the league boss how they were going back to their constituents and explain the conspiracy of confiscation by taxation, Townley swung his fist into the air and said: “GO HOME AND LIE, LIE LIKE DAMNED HORSE THIEVES!” . Judging from the kind of campaign the league is putting up Townley has advised his organ- izers the same way. ON fee 4 Fine leadership for the voters of North Dakota to follow: Townley should be defeated because: his puppet candidates have no moral right in Republican primaries. They are in every instance avowed socialists and in many instances registered social- ists. Under our loose primary system, the socialists have been able legally to invade the Republican party, steal its organization and use it for carrying out the principles of socialism. This count alone should be sufficient for all true Republicans to insist on a house cleaning and vote the socialists out of control of the Republican party and make them participate under their true party banner. ey . __ Townley should be defeated for his boast in Montana that the socialists would capture the Minnesota Republican primaries. “I know,” he said, “because I stacked the cards myself.” .____ However, the honest Republicans of that state cut the pack and ruined his fixed deck. It is time for North Dakota Republicans voting a solid unit against socialism to cut the pack which Townley has attempted to stack in this state to further his own ends June 30. Townley should be defeated because nip kind of a regime does not create independence in pub- lic office; it doés not attract upstanding and forward looking men. His domination has filled of- fices with weaklings, dependents, autocrats and bureaucrats and their continued administration will pile up deficits. : ‘ Townley should be defeated because his first lesson in socialism has been a dismal failure. The next step will be bolshevism. That is as someone has well put it “the last lesson in govern- ment. The class graduates from that into anarchy.” The administration of his state bank examiner’s office has been a public scandal. The famous Halliday letter is a matter of public record. Whenan examination of the Scandinavian American bank was necessary to allay public suspicion, the chief deputy in the bank examiners office ‘tipped off” the examination and suggested to the management “to shoot” doubtful paper to, other banks. ,It could be returned later, he advised naively so that the Townley opposition would have no thunder.” : : Will Townleyism be able in this day and generation to survive such malfeasance in office? Are the voters going to stultify themselves by endorsing such’an act at the primaries, June 30. Was that public official disciplined in any way for such an act? He was rewarded by promotion to a position of trust at an increased salary in the Bank of North Dakota, the institution which the Appeal to Reason’ declares Spurgeon O’Dell, a pupil of Convict Debs, organized. We appeal to you to vote for Frank White for U. S. 1. His loyalty is above question—his great record as a soldier in the Spanish American War and World. War shows this. 2. We believe him to be the most able man on the Republican Ticket for this office—his record and acts while Governor for four years, State Legislator for eight years, and as a practical farmer and business man for many active years, testify to ability and success. 3. He isnot tied to any faction—being entirely independent is hereby better enabled to look after the interests of all good citizens whether farmer, business man, service man or laborer. He will accept the nomination if elected. . All good loyal citizens should vote for him. His name is on the ticket and he will be nominated. | | Yours For Victory June 30th | | Committee of Ex-Service Men Welland Orchard, Dickinson, N.D. Wallace Morden, Wahpeton, N.D. Frank R. But a summary of the case of North Dakota against Arthur C. It is proposed to protect the individual against unlawful infringement upon his personal rights guaranteed under the federal and state constitution. - . 3 The anti-Townley, Republicans promise to end the riot of profilgacy as shown in the extrava- gance Of state government. Y They intend to displace:socialism and restore true Americanism as represented by the prin- ciples of the Republican party. . If Townley is defeated June 30, the school system threatened by the infusion of politics and radicalism, will be purged and guarded against the intrusion of a vicious propaganda. The Bank of North Dakota will become truly a farmers’ institution devoted solely to admin- istering to their needs as a strictly rural credits bank. It will not be used as a club against po- sites! opponents, but administered with the fairness that characterizes the federal loan banks of the nation. Revisions will be made in the workmen’s compensation act which will establish fair rates and all applications will be acted upon without political bias.. Under Townley’s regime hundreds of thousands of dollars have been collected in excess of all legitimate requirements. The tax laws will be revised so that the burden now placed upon the farmers will be equally distributed in accordance with our constitutional provisions. Under Townleyism, the farmer has been subjected to more taxes while persons residing in cities have enjoyed exemptions. Langer has pledged himself to place the management and control of all state industries estab- lished or in the process of completion under competent management and to give the taxpayers an immediate accounting of all public funds and of all transactions entered into by the mill and ele- vator association, the Bank of North Dakota and the Workmen’s Compensation Bureau. t These then are the counts in the indictment against Arthur C. The time for the voters to cast their verdict draws near. Townley’s program is in harmony with the doctrines and practices of soviet Russia. It is hostile to the spirit of America. “I greatly deplore the attempt to convey the impression that Mr. Young did eet support the bill, and that he left Washington before the vote was taken. The facts are Congressman Young left Washington only after the bill was reported favorably out of the committee.
