RICKEY, N.E. A. Staff Correspondent Washington, D. C., May 22.--Any list of “dark horse’ possibilities for tion that does not contain the name Beve- ridge*of Indiana, is incomplete. This is not merely my opinion. It is a suggestion made i ly by 's what. cles during these two crucial weeks, prior to the gathering of the delegates at Chicago. The next logical step would be to produce a man who could unite the antagonistic forces and keep them united during the campaign. May Be ‘Chairman It is pointed out that if Beveridge is chosen as permanent chairman 0? the convention, by arrangement be- tween the conservatives and progres- sives, which now seems fairly likely, il be in a much better strategic sition than any of the other “dark horses, Reverjdge, will not be unmindful of his great opportunity as permanent. chairman and will preside with such fairness as to make himself agree- able to all candidates and all fac- tions. As an orator Beveridge is certainly the equal of any man who will have the ear of the delegates. His speech as permanent chairman, if he sélected, will, no doubt, be a masterpiece, and will impress the delegates with his ability and force- fuln Thos in intimate contact with Beveridge in recent months, say that he is at the zenith of his pow- ers, physically and mentally, and that he may be depended upon. to strongly impress his sonality upon the convention, if given the chance. + Roosevelt Man The fact that Beveridge jointed the Roosevelt bolt in 1912 is in his favor rath than against his from the standpoint of availability. For it, is accepted as a foregone conclusion that if the convention is finally faced with the necessity of ing a compromise candidate, the progressives led ‘by Johnson and Borah must be placated, Beveridge was the chairman of the progressive national convention which nominated Roosevelt and Johnson in 1912,, He was senator from Indiana from 1899 to 1911. The record shows that he was’an aggressive and. con- sistent supporter of progressive poli: cies initiated by Roosevelt. . His retirement to private life at the end of his second term in the senate was due in large measure to the hostility of certain big business interests which were far more potent politically then than they are today. Qualities That Help Beveridge has many qualities which commend him to the republican man- agers whose chief interest in the con- vention 1s to bring about the nomina- tion of a candidate that they believe n win. ‘He is about the right age —58 years. He comes from the right ction of the country and from a pivotal state—Indiana. He is a splen- did campaigner and his nomination would assure’ an aggressive cam- paign. \ 1H early strugles against pro- erty were almost Lincolnésque and furnish a perfect background. for the presidential picture, He was born on a farm, in Ohio, of course; prob- ably in a log cabin. At 12 years he began to earn his living as a farm- hand. Two years later he was a railroad’ laborer, and at 15 he drove a logging team. ‘He worked his way through De Pauw university at Green Castle, aaa and graduated with honors in Since Beveridge retired from the senate he thas devoted himself to writing. His “Life of John Marshall,” recently published, is a monumental work and critics are agreed that it ‘s one of the great American Di- ographies, Mrs. MacDonald is Refused Teacher Pension by State Wife of Famous Educational Expert Applies for Annuity For Past Work Mrs. Neil’ C.
