The banks of the city have raised a fund to buy a purebred calf, purebred sow and a purebred ewe to be offered as first, second and | third prizes respectively. The purpose of the contest, which is being managed by George W. Gus. tafson, county agricultural agent, is to create a wider interest in the grow- ing of better grades of corn in this {county and to demonstrate to the | sceptical farmers the possibility of corn culture in this section. All ap- plications for participation in the con- test must be mailed to the county {agent on or before May 20. The rules of the contest provide that only 100 farmers can paraicipate, any variety of corn may be grown, {that each farmer be limited to 40 {acres and that the corn grown in each { 40-acre tract must be of the same corn in the field’ early in September, Cleanliness will be judged on the free dom from weeds’ between the rows. April 20.— Woodsmen and trappers, recently em- ployed by the government to take a census of elk in the Riding ‘Mountain's game preserve have returned with stories of the king of all elk on the North American continent. The great vuck is said to be the ‘leader of a;herd of 8,000 elk and isa wonderful animal. His great bulk stands out above all others in tne herd, and trappers who gained a close up view of him declare him to be in his prime. It is estimated that the spread of his antlers is at least eighty inches. | The Riding Mountain herd is one of the two great elk herds on the conti- j nent.
