SEEDING 70 BE UNDER WAY BY APRIL (5: Optimism Prevalent. in General Forecast Made: of North- west Conditions ‘nd { St, Paul, Minn,, April’13.—With but few exceptions seeding operations in all sections of Minnesota, ‘North and South Dakota and Montana will be started by April 15, unless weather conditions made it prohibitive. Min- nesota soil, with the large amount’ of moisture, this year is in excellent condition to receive the seed and, ac- ‘eording to officials of the state agri cultural department, the decrease in acreage, due to the searcity of lator and poor quality of seed, will be negli- gible. Unlike other years seeding in the northern and central sections of Min- nesota will start as early as inythe softhern districts, where the work was retarded by late storms and cold weather. ‘The sojl.in the central sec- tions is practically free ef excessive moisture and frost. Considerable Acreage Considerable acreage will be sown to clover, alfalfa and timothy, despite the high price of this seed, by farm- ers in the north central section of the state, according to John J. Hay; of the Minnesota department of agri- culture. The farmers, he said, can handle this crop with a minimum amount of labor, and ‘the returns are large. Sugar beets also will be a factor this year in Minnesota, espe- cially in the locality of Crookston, where farmers afe making arrange: ments to plant a large acreage. Because of the sow thistle which intests a large tract of land in the Red ‘River valley, a large acreage. of potatoes will -be planted. which ac- cording to agricultural experts will eradicate the thistle. Average production for the past seven years has been less than half that much. Short Supply (Because of the short supply and general yhigh » prices:. together, with high freight rates from Argentina, the price’ of flaxseed has been ex-' tremely high during the past year, rangifig up'to $6 a bushel. As a result, linseed oil has been so high that many owners ‘of buildings have postporied painting that should have been-done. Much. of this delayed painting must be done in the near future, even though the’ pricé of linseed oi] re- mains as high as at. present, The construction of new duildings also will cause an increased demand, ee RR RR ee in other sections of the .state and the northwest.
