E. A. Staff Special Washington, Feb. 10.—Photographie copies of the questionnaire and other draft records of William Harrison Dempsey, better known as “Jack” Demps prize fighter, are now in the possession of officials of the De- partment of Justice, who are investi gating the circumstances by which Dempsey was given a deferred draft rating ‘and was thus able to escape military service during the war. HAVE AFFIDAVIT ’ Others records held by the depart- ment in connection with the case in-| clude photographic copies of an at- fidavit by R. D. Goodman, of St. Louis, stating that he had assisted in filling out Dempsey's questionnaire and had advised with Dempsey as to how to proceed in inducing his wife, from) whom he was separated, to swear that he had been supporting her. Officials also have a copy of a let- ter setting out in even more detai) than the Goodman affidavit the steps! by which Mrs. Dempsey is alleged to! have been induced to support the fight- er’s claim for exemption. This let- ter states that a lump sum of $200 was paid Mrs. Dempsey through Dempsey's father, and the promise was made of further and substantial! payments. The offense in which these records tend to involve Dempsey is punishable | $ by imprisonment of from 30 days to one year, an official of the Department of Justice said toc Mast of the con- victions ef draft evaders to date have brought sentences of between three and six months. NEVER CLASSIFIED “In cases where evasion constitutes desertion trom the army,” this offi- cial said, {it is even punishable by death, But the finding of desertion only holdg in those ‘cases where men have evaded service after being class- ified as A-1 men and ordered to re- port at camp. “Dempsey never was classified for service. The offensesalileged against him, which the department is \investi- gating, is that in order to escape a classification that would have made him lable for military service he falsified in the answers to his ques- tionnaire _and, conspired with others to secure the signature of his wife, from whom he was separated, to a false statement as to her dependency.” STARK COUNTY PROUD OF WORK DONE ON ROADS!!
