In charge ofthe extermination of predatory animals in North Dakota and Montana are J. F. Gillings and R. C. Bateman, inspectors of the ba reau of biological survey at Washing- ton, with headquarters at Billings, Mont. Mr. Gillings was in Bismarck recently relative to the operation of a law enacted by the special session of the legislature permitting use of funds derived from fur sales for furtherance of the work of extermination. He explained that the campaign against predatory animals in North Dakota is not yet in an advanced stage, having commenced only last fail. while Montana has been warring ac- tively against these beasts of prey for four years. In the latter state, he sald, there has been a marked decrease in the loss of livestock among ranch- ers. although coyotes still are seen in bands ef from three to nine. OLD COUNTY'S LOSS HIGH. A>recent survéy of Pembina county, in the northeast corner of North Da- kota, where sheep are raised on a large scale, according to Mr. Gillings, showed an estimated aniiual logs in|, , livestock and poultry amounting — to $10000. Forty-three sheep-raiscrs: re- year. In Bottineau county, touching the Canadian borddr midway acros3 the state, 2§ ranchers sustained sheep losses to the amount of $3.150 during a 12-month period, according to the survey. A Mr. Gillings stated the grey wolf is the greater menace in southwestern North Dakota’ because it makes the larger livestock its prey. In section of the state where sheep and poultry are raised, he’ said, coyotes greate the most difficulty, Bear, lynx and bob- cats have been found in rare instances but are killed by the official. hunters only when it is established that’ tte particular animals are predatory. Mr. Gillings’ instructions -to’ his . workers as to bear and fox are: “If-they don’t bother the stock. den’t. bother them. for they are in reality game animals.” NEWSPAPER PILOT PASSES IN SOUTH Fargo, Jan. 1 Vord has just beea received by H.
