“WE ARE AMERICANS; WE CANNOT FIGHT OUR GOVERNMENT,” LEWIS (Continued trom Pare One) pointed at the conference to write the order. IN LONG SESSION The general’ committee had been in session since shortly af- ter 10 o’clock yesterday morn- ing, taking only brief recesses for lunch and dinner. The pro- ceedings were interrupted dur- ing the afternoon session by the appearance of United States Marshal Mark Storen and his deputy, who served 33 of the of- ficials with copies of the tem- porary injunction issued Satur- day and returnable December 1. The writ in the restraining order was made returnable No- vember 20. During the day approaches to the entrance of the conference hall were carefully guarded by a sergeant-at-arms and during) the recesses a man remained on guard in the hall, but in the lat- ter hours of the conference the sergeant-at-arms disappeared. SPEECHES IMPASSIONED The speeches at times were impassioned and voices from the hall rose above the hubbub of} the hotel in which the confer- ence was held, but only a word now and then was distinguish- able, The recall of the strike order will open the way immediately for a resumption of the negotia- tions between the miners and the aperators, as the operators have announced that they would be ready to consider a new wage| agreement at any time the strike order was withdrawn. ‘Vhe question of just how many coal diggers would obey the order rescinding the strike was problematical early today. In some districts it was consi ered that the resumption o work would be general, while in others it would be only parti and in some it was said the r turn would be very slow. One of the chief handicaps the can- vassing teams faced was the in- clement weather which made it diffi- cult to visit everybody in the city. Another fact which has kept the city from reaching its quota is the failure of heads of families to take out mem- bership for their entire families. In the drive last year, subscriptions for every member of the family was the or twelve such subscriptions were re- ceived, It is expected that the county di- rectors have had a great deal of trouble obtaining subscriptions be- cause of the snow filled roads mak- ing traveling almost impossible. It is hoped, though that the county will come nearer its quota than the city has, but it is not believed the total will reach 2,500, for the county, in- cluding Bismarck. “Although the drive officially end- ed last night,” said Raymond Berge- One dose will}son, director of the campaign, today, “this should not prevent persons from joining the Red Cross who have not We are moving on with our big Merchandise Sale every day in our effort to close out a general stock of merchandise amountin TO MAKE ROOM FOR OUR NEW STOCK TRANSIT.
