G00D CITIZENS Vex to you? Think it over. SERVICE —That’s Our Middle Name LAHR MOTOR SALES COMPANY | PHONE 490. ARMY FACTOR IN MAKING ALIENS Work in Americanization one of Most Important Accom- plishments ,., Chicago, Oct. 18—What the Amer- ican Army is accomplishing as an “Americanization” agency was demon- strated in Chicago last week when} the “Americans All” detachment from the Camp Upton Educational Center, now touring the eastern half of the country, gave a series of drills and recruiting talks here. The detach- | ment is composed of twenty men, representing fourteen nationalities, who enlisted three months ago, at which: time they were unable to speak, read or write English. Now, on the authority of army officers, they drill “with the proficiency of veteran regu- lars” and can speak, read and write the language of their adopted country. Best of all, it is declared the men, appreciating the opportunities af- forded them, are putting their hearts in their work and their service is in gratitude rather than purely for their personal interests. The detachment is in charge of Lieut.-Col. Bernard Lentz, of the gen- eral staff, Washington, the originator of the special system under which they have been trained in arms. Only one of the men is a native born American and he was an illiterate at enlistment. The others are of follow- ing nationalities: Spanish, Lithuan- ian, Italian, French-Canadian, Nor- wegian, Finnish, French, Polish, Rus- sian, Armenian, Greek, Dutch, Jugo- Slavish and Danish. With the discovery by the War De- partment that thousands of the men called in the selective service were physically able to serve but could not understand the English language, it was sought to remedy the situation by organizing ,such men into com- panies and battalions for special schooling. Class room instruction was alternated with drill, so that the men’ became good American citizens while becoming good American sol- diers. At the close of the war it was de- cided to continue the benefit of educa- tion to dll recruits needing it. Thus the “recruit educational centers” were established for aliens and illiterate native Americans. It was also pro- vided that aliens enlisted for three years might at the expiration of that time become full-fledged American | citizens, thus reducing, by two years the time required in civil practice. Before the war Indians were the only exception to the rule that all recruits must be able to use the English lan- guage. The first of the “recruit educational centers,” established at Camp Upton, | proved so successful that the govern- ment decided to show the product of its “melting pot” to the nation and the detachment now on tour is that “exhibit.” In addition to the school, the War Department also conducts in all branches of the service vocational training schools where the enlisted men may learn the trade of their choice, the “Army University” that will teach the soldier anything from land surveying to gas engineering, from bridge building to wireless telegraphy, and from blacksmithing to aerial navigation. This is, of course, free to the soldier and in ad- dition to this food, clothing and army pay. Several if not all of the “Amer- icans All” detachment expect to take advantage of these opportunities. The success of the detachment in learning to drill is attributed largely to the “cadence system of close order drill” originated by Colonel Lentz. Army officers who have seen what has been accomplished by this unique system under which the men actually give the commands themselves, exe- cone them at the same time, are de- clared to be enthusiastic. Veterans who saw the “Americans All” detach- ment were impressed by the snap and “pep” put into their drilling here. The litchi nut, China’s favorite fruit, 1s now being grown in southern Florida.
