WARD COUNTY 70 BUILD 75 NILRS OF GRAVEL ROAD Big Shire to North of Us Takes Leadership in Highway Construction Ward county assumed the leader- ship in the construction of ‘permanent. highways in North Dakota last week when a preliminary inspection was made-for 75 miles of graveled road- way which the state highway com- mission hopes to complete in whole or to a large extent by the end of next year. There will be 23 miles on the Wonderland trail; 26 miles between Minot and Max; 15 miles north of Minot and 28 miles on the Green trail, between Minot and Ken- mare. Preliminary inspections have. also been made for two earth road proj- ects on ‘the Northern highway | in Burke county, between Bowbells and the Divide county line, and in Di- vide county, aggregating 38 miles; for two projects of ten miles each on the Northern highway in ‘Williams county; two new projects on the Wonderland trail, the first from ‘a point three miles west of Ray east to ,the Mountrail county lines, and the second from Williston west to the state line; and two new projects in Mountrail county, one extending 18 miles east from Stanley and the sec- ond joining this project and extend- ing it east to the Ward county line. The surveys on several of these proj- ects are nearing completion. Over 200 miles of prospective state and federal highway is projected. It is not probable that all of) these sur- veys will be completed this ‘fall, but the highway commission plans to fin- ish as much as possible. A large party is now at work on the Ward county project, which is the largest bit of graveled road- building which the state highway commission has undertaken to date. DOLLARS—AND SENSE! —Think It Over— Dollars are not made out of India rubber and yet they can be stretched. And right now is the open season for stretching. Have you stopped to consider that three or five years from now, or per- haps sooner, the dollar which now seems to have a hole in it as large as that of a doughnut may once more be the solid, powerful piece of money that it was before the mighty armies in Europe rocked the world? | There always has been a period of, artificially high prices following each big War. ‘In this country, it was several years before normal conditions were restored after the Civil War but condi- tions ultimately did adjust themselves and a few years after the Civil War there was a big difference as to the buying value of money. ‘ With these facts in mind—to say nothing of the multiplicity of other arguments in its favor—is not the su- preme period of saving at hand? If, by making wise investments and curb- ing reckless spending, you can keep the present discounted dollar until the clouds have rolled away, it is readily seen that it will be a move in the right direction. The government is doing its best to awaken the public to a realization of these facts and presents an opportu- nity along these lines by the sale of thrift stamps, war savings certificates and on October 6 it hopes for a big sale of the recently authorized $100 and $1,000 Treasury Certificates, nick- med “Savings Bonds,” wove Size Doesn’t Count When They’re Trained San Francisco—“My good- ness, young man, take my seat. You mustn’t stand up with that big bundle on your back.” This was what a middle-- ged woman said to a five-foot noth- ing chap dressed in a soldier uni- form who was toting a huge camping outfit on his back while riding in a street car here dur- ing a morning hour. There were a half dozen other khaki clad, burden laden young men standing in the same sec- tion ofthe car, but the woman signaled out the little fellow as entitled to her sympathy and motherly compassion. The former soldier said: “Oh! No'm, I’m all right!” His fellows giggled at .him, and he who had been offered the seat blushed. < One strapping ex-sergéant leaned down to the woman when she had resumed her seat and said:: ‘ “Truck there don’t mind a lit- tle camping outfit on his back welgging 75 pounds. He packed cannons on his back for 15 ‘months ‘over there.” We are 3 going to hike over the’ hills’ to- ‘day. to get an appetite.
