« ‘ > AMERICANTRGION MAKES PLANS FOR BIG CONVENTION Members Condemn Wilson Day Reception Committee for Treatment at Auditorium. ‘ TO TEACH PATRIOTISM Committees Named to Arrange for First State Meeting of Service Men in State Plans for the entertainment of the delegates to the first state convention of the American Legion which will be held here, October ¥6 and 17 were started last night at the bi-monthly ‘ganization. an of the Bismarck post of that LO Besides the transaction of this usiness, the Legion unanimously passed a resolution condemning the action of the reception committee on Wilson day for not permitting the colors carried in the parade by a guard of Legion members from entering the auditorium, as well as refusing ad- mittance to the*hall to the members of the Legion. The same action to- ward several civil. war veterans was also condemned in the same resolu tion. The Legion unanimously voted-down a-proposal to request the school board “here to permit the male students of the high school to: have two hours military training a week under the supervision of soldiers of the regular army. This action was taken follow- ing\a statement made by Adjutant General Fraser against the proposal as being part of the general staff at Washington propaganda for universal military service. The members voted to start a cam- paign to educate the pepole of this yicsnity as to the respect required to- ward the American flag and the na- tional anthem. In all probability the eity. and county superintendents of schools: will he asked to co-operate with the legions in spreading this information. : It. was stated at the meeting that at. the Wilson day parade very few men along the line of march removed their hats when the colors went by and they request every man in the city when another parade is held here to remove their head dress. It wae also pointed out that people only rise and stand uncovered for one national anthem and that is the Star Spangled Banner and that when America is played'no one should rise. The Legion voted unanimously last night to co-operate in any way pos- sible with the Burleigh County War Mothers to make the homecoming cele- bration and dedication of the flagpole and flag a success. The War Mothers were advised that it would be impos- sible for the Legion members_to ap- pear in uniform on either October 16 or 17 and that as they would be too busy with their state convention on those two days, that a day preceding the convention, October 15, would be suitable to them for holding the cele- bration. % It was brought out-at the meeting that there was some uncertainty as to the ownership of the armory and as there are a great many members of the former Company A, that used the building before their departure for tue border in 1917, who are also me that the Legion might “be named as owners of the building. ly A committee composed of Henry 'T, Mur- phy, Ferris Cordner and Fred Graham, all former Company A men, was named to investigate the matter. Because of the large amout of work to, be done between now and the open- ing of the state convention next month, it-ig planned to hold meetings every week instead of twicea month, The meetings will be held in the Elks club as usual on Thursday evenings. : The entertainment munittee pointed by Capt, A. A. mander of the post, co ap. com- Ad- ‘of jutant General Fraser, Robert Treacey | ~ and M. B. Gilman. This committee will probably obtain boxing and wrestl- ing. matches, aviation exhibitions, gireas:and carnivals if possible and other forms of entertainment. The finance committee headed by George Russ, Jv.. is composed of Leon- ard Sather, W. Boyd, Ferris Gordner and Henry T, Murphy. It will ieit funds from the merchants and business men.of, the city to defray the cost of entertaining the delegates. Senate Committee .
