Six HEAVY CUT IN COAL YIELD BY CAR SHORTAGE Twelve Million Tons Lost in Ten Weeks by Inadequate Supply of Cars. 600,009 MINERS PLAN TO ASK WAGE INCREASE Operators Tell Senate Committee That Radical Miners Are Try- ing to Install Soviet Methods in Mining. Washington.— (Special) —Shortage of car tion of bituminous coal tWelve million tons in ten weeks and threatens to bring about a recu mine of 1917-1918 thout delay, according to testimony given by John Callahan, traffic man- ager of the National Coal peiation, before the committee tigating the coal situation, at its first day's hearing here. “During the two weeks ending Aug- ust.2 and 9,” Mr. Callahan said, “car shortage caused the bituminous coal mines of the country to lose approxi- mately 5,900,000 tons of coal, enough to supply the entire state of New Jersey for ten months. The loss in ten weeks has been’ sufficient to sup- ply all the New England states for eight months.” Mr. Callahan declared that if there are not cars at the mines it is impos sible to operate them to full-time capacit The shortage of cars had come, he s t the time demand for coal is increasing, and at a time when railroad efficiency should be at a maximum. “If the bituminous coal operators the country are given suffie to take away the coal they mine, Callahan labor disturbances to prevent the op- eration of the coal mines, they supply sufficient fuel to meet the country’s requirements next fall and winter. If they are not supplied with more cars, there undoubtedly will be a repetition of the coal shoriage of 1917-18, at least to some degree.” Shortage of cars is not alone the |? the association, who preceded Mr. Callahan on the witnes nd. The 600,000 miners employed throughout the nation are about to formulate de- mands for higher wages, Mr. ‘Taylor declared, ‘The mo dical, among the number, he said, were endeavoring to apply the methods of the soviet gov- ernment of Russia to the bituminous industry. If their counsel should sway the more conservative of their numbers and” extremely lical de- mands should be made, which could not be acceded to, Mr. Taylor said he doubted if the operators “could mine a pound of coal.” “To save the public from calamity,” Mr. Taylor said, “it will be necessary fo overcome three things: TVirst, tha we do not have an extraordin: severe winter; second, that the road administration move the coal in a regular manner; and third, that by effort of the miners we produce at least eleven million tons of bituminous coal weekly for the remaining .nine- of the year.” is more than has been pro- duced in any one week during the year thus far All wage agreements between miners and operators, Mr. ylor said, would expire with the proclamation of peace by the president. The miners had rlready decided, Mr. Taylor said he nformed, in one section, to try té obtain a x-hour wo! F4 against eight hours now, e-day week and an increase in pay. They will meet in Cleveland, Ohio, Septem- ber 9, he said, to decide on what de- mands to make of the operators, and there will be a joint conference be tween operato and miners at But- falo, September 25. “If this convention of September 25 fails in sement,” Mr. Taylor said, “T don't know whether we are going NATURE’S MIRROR When a woman ig well and healthy—- there’s @ sparkle im her eyes, a q4 rose tint in her cheeks, and she has Arich red blood.
