Popular Youngster Has Narrow Escape Master Donald Keniston, young son of Mr.\\and Mrs. George 'N. Keniston, narrowly escaped death or serious in- jury last evening when Night Captain Jensen of the police force ran down the lad in an attempt to avoid a col- lision with an automobile which had turned directly into Jensen’s car, on the wrong side of the street: (Master Donald was peddling along on his: bicycle, and he had just ‘turned out for the violator of traffic rules and was watching his car, when ‘the cdl- lision with Jensen’s machine occurred. The bicycle went under the wheels of the automobile; and its young rider slight scratches, ‘but the wheel was wrecked. The man who is blamed for the acci- dent was immediately placed under arrest by Capt, Jensen. pial F tttascher RETURNS FROM VACATION Mrs. Frank L. (M. Martin, superintendent of schools, today. Mr. Martin stated there would be a general ‘meeting of all teachers, su- pervisors and principals of city schools September 1 in the afternoon to receive instructions for the opening of the schools on the following day. It is expected, according to Mr. Mar- tin, that the 44 teachers now engaged for the schools will have to be added to as the enrollment is going to be larger this year than it was last. Mr. (Martin said he expected 1,400 pupils to attend school compared with 1350 last. year. \Night School in November. The night school will be resumed some time in November, and the same courses of studies followed as were in force last session. Five teach- er will be used for this school. It was pointed out that the state bears one- half the expense of this night school. following school on the first day, the first teachers’ grade-group meet- ing will be held to outline and plan the work of the various classes for the following two weeks. These meet- ings are held every two ‘weeks for this purpose. Athletics to Front. Athletics will again play a promi- nent part in high school activities. Spencer Boise has been named coach of the two high school football teams and he expects to have the squads out practising on the athletic field at the capitol every day immediately after the resumption of school, Principal C. F. Bolt, who will return from his vacation in Michigan next Tuesday, will proceed to draw up a schedule of games for both teams, it was stated. A new department has been added to the school courses this year, that of physical education. Miss Catherine Roherty, of Evansville, Wis. an ex- pert graduate teacher of this subject, will have entire charge of this subject in the various city schools. The class- es will be held in the gymnasium and out of doors when weather @ermits and Miss Roherty, through the teach- ers, will supervise the work. Builds Lockers. ‘R. H. Neff, director of the high school manual training course, has been at work most of the summer,con- structing lockers in the dressing room attached to the high school gymnas- ium. Mr, Neff has built 170 of these lockers, it was reported, and the sav- ing to the school board under this ar- rangement is about $700, it was said. Visiting Daughter. C. A. Play McKenzie Sunday Bismarck will meet McKenzie on the capitol diamond this Sunday af- ternoon. Patzman’s Colts were trim- med by the McKenzie nine at their last session, but the locals are con- fident of a victory this time. ‘Returns to Winnipeg Mrs. P. Stebbins on Avenue A, returned to her home this afternoon, accompanied by Mrs. Stebbins. ‘ For Miss Bruce, (Misses Esther Staley, Mary Parsons and Nan Cushing will entertain a few of Miss Glenn Bruce’s most intimate friends at the Staley home this even- ing in honor of Miss Bruce of Minne- apolis, who has been a guest of Bis- marck schoolmates for several days. Woodmansee of the Wood- mansee apartments entertained a few young friends this afternoon in honor of her neice, Miss Nita Foster of Chi- cago, who is a guest at the Wood- mansee home.
