OIL PIPE LINE IS A JONAH Missouri Fish Die by Thousands In Streams, Cattle Go Thirsty, and So On. St. Louls—The breakage of an old pipe line in Missouri has caused thou sands of fish to die, cattle to go with- out water, cornfields to be ruined and general consternation in the south central portions of this state along the Missouri river. The pipe line carries ofl from the Oklahoma and Kansas fields to the re- fineries in Indiana. It seems to have a way of breaking at spots, The re sult is that the oil seeks the low places, gets into thevcreeks, smothers the fish and keeps the stock from drinking. When the pipe bursts in a corn field there is havoc. Farmers try to burn the oil off the streams that stock may drink. This burning often cooks the fish, for the fire from oil is fierce. London.—The British press general ly asserts that the commercial devel- opment of the airplane is much further advanced in\Great Britain than in any other country. According to the Amer: {can chamber of commerce in London, a mail service from Cairo to India al- ready has been surveyed and a route; from Cairo to the Cape of Good Hope is being laid out. Acrodromes are to be established at suitable spots in the British isles and British possessions and equipped with sound and light signals, balloons, aerial buoys, and wireless telegraph and tele: phone outfits. “Already cargo airplanes are in sight,” the chamber of commerce an- nounces. “A huge British seaplane 01 novel type, equipped with five motors, has been flown, carrying six tons, at 100 miles an hour. POLICE HOAXED BY SEA LIONS ‘ — Woman's Cries Call Out Rescue Party on Wiid Night Off Point Fizmin, Cal. Los Angeles—It was a wild night off Point Firmin. A gale was blowing and the edges of the huge combers which were roll. ing into the rocky shore were being torn to shreds by the wind and driver in fine spray against the embattlec cliffs, Suddenly, as the gale died down for a moment, the shrill voice of a wom- an apparently battling for her life in the seething surf, pierced the air, Another woman in a cozy cottage on the cliffs above heard it and, sent ina hurry call to the harbor (San Pe- dro) police for rescuers. A dozen men armed with ropes and life buoys rushed to the scene in an automobile. Directed to the spot they hurried down the cluffs to the edge of the foaming sea.
