JULY FOURTH--- Will have a brand new meaning’ for Americans in this, the first year of the New Peace. Instead of the thoughtless celebration of former years there will be a deeper rejoicing over the victory earned and the safe return of our boys. There will be a reverent thought for those who did not return—for those who paid the cost of world peace. The day should mark a new birth of whole souled Americanism and a greater National Pride. L Woman Pharmacists May Be Relegated; Hotels Increase Charges; Many Queries More than 200 requests have come from various parts of the state to the attorney general's office for interpre- tations of the new laws governing the employment of female-labor in North Dakota, states Assistant Attorney General E. B. Cox. There seems ‘to be a disposition in some quarters to find a way of evading the law, but the situation generally indicate a de- sire to adjust conditions to comply with the statute. Many female work- ers have written in to inquire wheth- er they may not. work eigitt hours at one occupation and devote additional time each day to other-employment. Without, going into the matter form- ally, the attorney general’s office has expressed the belief that they can- not. The effect of the law on women pharmacists-is causing much trouble. Many of the drug stores in the state employ women who are graduate pharmacists, and their hours usually are longer than the law specifies. Druggists have advised the attorney general’s office that they cannot em- ploy two pharmacists and that if the law is strictly. enforced: they will be compelled to replace women with men. Locally stores, restaurants and ho- tels have increased their staffs to en- able them to comply with the’ act. As usual, the cost’ goes ultimately to the consumer. Hotels on both: sides of the river-have increased room rates 25 cents a day, and in many instances five or ten cents has been added to the cost of items on hotel and restau- rant bills of fare. : Attorneys insist that the act is dis- criminatory, in that it-does not apply to villages of less than 500, and they believe it would not stand up in any court.
