The rioting grew so ser- fous that the company at the request of the police closed its shop on May 8th. When adequate protection was promised the company again opened the shop, and several thousand men were at work. At the. beginning of the second week men armed with stones, clubs and iron bars met the strect cars, dragged men from. the cara, - beat them up, and then atacked ‘ten, going to: and coming: frem-the plant. A large number were seriously injured, some were expected to die, and, two were killed iln the rioting. The mayor informed the company that: he was totally unable to give protection to the plant, and the homes of the men, and asked that the company again close its plant.
