Maud Powell, who left last. night on the North Coast limited for Chicago, after spending four days in Bismarck, carried away with her happy» mem- ories of the capital city of North Da- kcta. She was a guest at the Grand Pacific Hotel, “It has been a pleasant experience,” said Madam Powell when she called af The Tribune office yesterday to ex- press her appreciation for the royal regeption that Bismarck gave her. “T never have had a finer audience. It was not so much the enthusiasm displayed in the encoresas the close attention which was given every. num- ber. It is very difficult. for an artist to play to an audience which will not listen, Last night my audience fol- lowed every note. It was a pleasure to play to your people. It was. very unusual audience, one, I think, that ;'t-| Bismarck should be proud of.” Is aPioneer In response to a Fr cceestion that her coming and the, success of her concert had paved the way for other good things in Bismarck, Madam Pow- y | ell spoke of her pleasure in pioneering. “I believe I have it in my blood,” f-|said Madam Powell?” “All of my an- cestors have been pioneers. An uncle of mine, Major Powell, was the first white man to go down the Colorado canon. We have the real pioneering instinet in our blood. “It is. difficult, sometimes, ‘to play tq an audience to which anything that smacks of the ‘classical’ is strange, an audience which may be at the very start unconsciously antagonistic, re- solved to resist conversion. But it is a splendid thing’ to play to such an audience and to see that you really are putting over good music and that you are blazing the way for something better.” ~ Likes the Newspapers Madam Powell likes the press and feels at home in a’ newspaper office. Her husband’s father, Godfrey H, Turner, was for thirty years leading editorial writer on the London Eve- ing Telegram. Madam Powell is her- self a writer as well as a composer in her spare moments. And she is a woman who is so engaging that the press everywhere has been unusually kind to her. She is an artiste who uses none of the tricks of the trade to impress her art upon those with whom she comes in contact. She “gets across” through personality, rather than “temperament”; she is effective, but not affected. Madam Powell made her debut in New York city in 1884, after Joachin,. the greatest violinist of his time, had personally undertaken her career in Paris. She has been on the concert 1 {Stage for 35 years, and today she is young, vigorous and fresh. She has lived with as well as for her art. She has developed along broad li not allowing herself to become a victim of a single idea nor a one-sided’ culture, and thus she is today, at an age when many artists have prent their powers, at the very heighth f her career.
