Beale, who came to Bis: marck more than a year in ad- vance of the railway, when there were but four men in “Carlton City,” the earliest predecessor of the capital city, is here from North Anson, Maine, for a visit with old. friends. _ Mr. Beale, came to Bismarck in the spring of 1972, driving overland from Fargo with a par- ty of engineers. With John Doyle and a son of General Meigs, Mr. Beale assisted in laying out’ the original plat. of Edwinton, which is now the heart of Bismarck. The only white ‘men residing /in this (vicinity at_the time were J. J. Jackman, E. N. Corey and two others whose names Mr. Beale could not recall.
