A’ Olsness, insurance commis- sioner, Aas repudiated an alleged jn- terview appearing in the St. Paul Press, critical of the printing and board of administration bills. Mr. Olsness, however, has reiterated his opposition to the printing bills. The insurance commissioner first offend- ed the powers last year when in dis- tributing ‘insurance: statements for publicatign he gave afew of them to independent newspapers which had not supported or which had -actively opposed certain features of tné league fovement. Not Opposing League. No one who is acquainted with these five state ofiic:als or who has per- sonally discussed their stand with them has even suggested that they are opposing any vital feature of the league movement. The business has been conducted privately, and for months past has received little attention from the opposition. There has, however, been much appartnt dissatisfaction within the ranks of certificate-hold- ers. One instance of this was the meeting of Consumers’ Co. certificate- holders with Townley a year ago in this city, where the president of the National Nonpartisan league is report- ed to have informed the men who,had put up the money that what, became of; the big balance not actually in- vested in stores was none of their bus- iness, President Townley does not appear to be in a position to sidestep re- sponsibility for the Consumers’ scheme. Norbert O'Leary, his. private secretary, and H. L, Elliott, state man- ager. of the league, were among the original —incorporators. Hastings, Brinton and other men.whom Townley has employed in similar schemes, were until very recently actively iden- tified with, this, enterprise. Letters are on file from Townley in which he directs the organization of stores. Valley City Deal. |. In the Valley City banking deal, which will have another inning with the blue sky commission this week, the Courier-News on behalf. of the league denies all responsibility, de- claring Hastings and Box were acting in their private capacity. There is on record with the blue sky commis- sion Hastings’ testimony to the effect. that he went to Valley City and un- dertook the organization of a league abn kthere at the personal direction of Mr. Townley; that Mr. Townley was cognizant of the undertaking at all times, and that he conferred with ‘Hastings on the matter while the pro- ject was under way and advised: the retention of 50 per cent of the stock. for the league. {Washburn School Entertains Patrons | <Washburn, N. D., March 24.—The annual entrtainment by the Washburn public school was given at the Liberty theatre on Thursday evenin, witnessed by a crowd that almost filled the hall to its capacity. All the grades, from | the first through the high school, were, represented on the stage. The teach- ers drilled the pupils for several weeks and the opinion of patrons seem to be that the performance throughout was quite creditable. The program opened with “Tenting Tonight” by the upper grades follow- ed by a wand drill_by the first and second grades. The third and fourth gave the stately minuet, followed by a motion song “Timid Maids from Japan”, by the fifth and sixth grades. A minstrel show put on by the boys, during which several of Washburn’s leading citizens were. “heckled”won applause. A two-act comedy, ‘Miss Neptune”, by high school students, was well accepted. - The specialties included a duet. “The Gypsy Trail’, by | Maxine McCulloch dnd Sophy Kreme- netsky; a patriotic pantomine “My Country ‘Tis of Thee”, by Mabel | Whitlock, with a selection by the girls’ quartet, comprising Blanche Wahl, Vivien McGuire, Helen Creamer and Florence Nelson.
