G00D ROADS GIVEN BOOST AT LEAGUE MEET Townley Appears for First Time in Five Minute Address to Bismarckers BRINTON TALKS FINANCE State Bank Workings Superfi- cially Touched Upon by Former Beach Promoter i One of the finest bits of film Bis- | marck has had the pleasure of seeing was the Illinois good road _ picture, | used in the Sucker state in carrying | a $60,000,000 bond issue for better and exhidited at the Auditorium on Saturday evening by the North Dakota} highway commission. The film wa sent here through a mistake, which proved a very fortunate one. The film, with its titles and insets, is one of the best preachments for good roads that could be imagined. Illinois gumbo is much similar to the; North Dakota variety. Its “natural”! roads, as exhibited in this film, great- ly resemble North Dakota’s common dirt highways, and the transportation | possibilities of real, hard-surfaced | roads, as disclosed by this film | revelation which set the leg: and others who composed the ¢ audience, thinking. along construc! lines. e | Kauliuss Explains i J. W. Kaulfuss, assistant secretary j of the state highway commission, gave | § a brief talkon good roads before the film was shown. He told the import-; ant part that good highways and motor | trucks had player in the allied victory. on the west front, He detailed North Dakota's. needs, and the plans which the state highway commission has made for cooperation with the federal bureau of roads, which will, if the Bankhead amendment to the federal post roads bill now under considera- tion in the United States senate car- ries, having $4,000,000 to invest in bet- ter North Dakota highways before July 1, 1921. Kaulfuss said that the state highway commission’s system embraces now more than 4,000 miles of the 64,000 miles of public roads in North Dakota, and that the problem of road con- struction is one which must,be met ‘by ‘every county and every township. The construction of trunk-line roads will call for the building of feeders, and communities will develop largely as they meet this need. be Frasier ‘at. From the Publicity Film Co. studios also came a picture of the passing wild life of the west, scenes shot on the great Burnstad ranches near Pol- lock, S. D., and on the Sioux county side of the Missouri, in our own state. Native Dakotans were shown in do- mestic life, in tribal ceremonials and in the enjoyment of aboriginal sports and customs. One reel was devoted to the recent Sioux county fair at Fort Yates, in which a patriotic note was injected through Red Cross pow-wows, memorials in honor of young men of the tribe who were serving their coun- try overseas, and through the wafting from in front of each council tent of service banners and Red Cross flags.
