Saving lives which will be menaced by a return of flu should not be left to individual scientist or to private and semi-public institutions. It should be financed by the government at Wash-} ington. | * * * \ Research can’t be undertaken after the next epidemic of flu has arrived. To find a cure, or to determine the best way to combat flu next win- ter, researches must be started quickly. The Daily Tribune proposes, and urges earnestly that congress finance such researches by an approprie- tion of $5,000,000. A part of the appropriation should be at the dis- posal each of Surgeon General Merritte W. Ire- land of the army, Surgeon General W. C. Brais- ted of the navy and Surgeon General Rupert Blue of the United States public health service. The remainder of the appropriation should be placed in the hands of the president, for subsidiz- ing what experimental stations may seem to him best adapted to this work. The entire amount should be spent in isolating the flu germ, experimenting with the best meth- ods of treatment, to find, if possible, a serum that will diminish the danger of attack, if it does not ward it off. In lives, loss to workers, and in other ways, this winter’s epidemic has cost the nation not less than $200,000,000. A congressional appropriation would be well _ risked, even if not sure preventive is found after government scientists have spent the entire $5,000,000. American lives are not alone at stake. The flu has been as bad in South America as in the United States. It is as bad in France as in Eng- er. You beat it away with sharp glances hither nd yon—in order to dodge inquisitive friends and acquaintances—and you handle the bottle with as much loving care as though you were an ancient tank in a dry town who had secured a quart of the old jazzerino. Up in your room you carefully pull down the |shades and then rub the stuff in your scalp with high hopes and an exact regard for the printed directions. Next, you lightly and cautiously brush your thinning locks and, with.a gulp and a gasp of intense anguish, discover more than the normal number of loose hairs adhering to the bristles. Finally you go down to the evening meal with a morose look and a distinctly sweet scent clinging about your head like a damp cloud hugging a hill- side on a misty morning. Your family giggles at you behind your back and anonymous miscreants send you skull caps and toupees through the mails. When you drift into a barber shop for a shave you expect commiseration and coarse laughter from the razor wielder. Instead, he runs his hand through your hair with a gladsome smile and emits this gloom destroying line of dope: “What thick hair you have! You have a wonderful head of hair! You’ll never become bald! But you must take care of your hair! Now this preparation I have here will keep your hair as it is forever,' and—? Oh, boy, you forget/about your previous hair restorer experiences and you buy everything in the shop! Who says barbers don’t know hu- man nature? They’ve brought General Wood out of the woods at last. “German president to serve ten years!” The Jand. It has been yet worse in Asia and in some ex-kaiser should be made to serve for life.
