SATURDAY, OCT. 12, 19138 - American Soldier Boys, Hosts of Royalty at Picnic,‘ Serve Feast of Hard. Boiled Eggs, and Ham Sandwiches With Aid of Y. M.C. A. in Aix-les-Bains, They Retarn Hospitality of Duchess of Vendome, Sister of King Albert of Belgium,Spread- ing Their Table on the | Ground. By Maxmilian Foster. GRACEFUL little A just come from Aix: to show that our France have something more in their natures than the grim de- termination to fight the Hun to the > finish, One rather marvels, in fact, at the self-possession of these lads from home. At the same time, too, is proud that they 80 politely represent us all. A few days ago, the Duchesse de Vendome, sister of the King of Belgium, visited the Y. M. headquarters ap Aix. There she one was presented to one hundred and = Bitty watering pt few days jeter the Duchess sent an invitation to the American lads to take tea with her at ber residence, the Hotel Splendide. All the one. hundred and fifty. went. rh and all of them, too, it may be said, had a royal time. Having enjoyed the hospitality ,; of the duche; the one hundred and fifty privates put their heads together and decided that it would be ouly proper to return the hospi- tality, Accordingly, they appointed a committee among themselves, and arranged fot: her highness’ enter- tainment a real’ old fashioned pienie. The place selected was across the lake from Aix, The duchess having accepted the boys’ invita- tion, they borrowed the Y. M. C. A. steamer which makes dally trips for them about- the lake,--They loaded the craft with ham sand- wieb hard boiled eggs, potato salad, the materials for tea, coffee and lemonade and all the candy they could lay their hands gn. Then with the duchess, and the duke and their daughter, Princess Genevieve, they set sail for the picnie ground. x The ladies of the Y. M. C, A. at Aix also went along. With these to help them, the boys spread out their feast. The place was Haute- combe Abbey, the last resting place of the heads of the House of Savoy, but the presence of neither the living nor the dead petentates Io the least: disturbed the youthful American hosts. Nor were the duke and his family in the least ill at ease. Along with their hosts they sat on the grass. It was all we one-of the Y. M. C. A, girls ex- pressed it later: “Maybe it did look strange to see the sister of 2 king sitting on the ground eating American hard boiled gggs and ham sandwiches; but BANKERS AND BUSINESSMEN Must work together in perfect harmony and un- dersta nding: The hustling man makes his earnings. A, has entered into contracts with a hundred of the hotels in and around Aix to take care of our boys. At stated intervals, each soldier in the army will be allowed leave of absence, this leave allowing him to spend eight days in Aix-les-Bains and the nejghborhood. While the boys are there, the Y. C. A. diverts them with excursi into the surround- ing country. At night there are reg- ular entertainments in the~ “Y” Casino. The boys return to their duty, from these trips refreshed and re-invigorated. So impressed was the duchess with what the Red Triangle waa doing in Aix that she sent the “Y” a letter of appreciation ‘as well as an autograph photograph of her- self: “To the Y. M. C, A.: so. impressed by spirit of your work, and it has so interested me that I must ‘send just this little word of appreciation, HENRIETTE, Duchesse de Vendome.” Since the letter came the duchess and her daughter have further shown how much they appreciate ihe “Y’s” endeavors by Yersonally assisting at many of the Red Tri- angle entertainments.
