Westley of the Crookston experiment station upon his return fro man inspection trip to the vari- ous farmers. cooperating in growing pure seed in Clay and Norman coun- ties reported:a great deal of interest in the visiting day at the Northwest Experiment station today. The station fields and plots ot which there are over five hundred, represent numerous lines of sofl, crop. fertilizer, cultural and varietal inves- tigations of far-reaching influence when their ultimate conclusions are secured. Of special interest is the varietal testing of wheat, oats, barley, flax, alfalfa, clovers, peas and root crops. One’ variety of barley which ha» averaged 45.5 bushels per acre tthe past seven years and is now being grown by 60 farmers in the different Red River counties is evoking speciat notice. It yielded a maximum of 58.8, bushels per acre when another rivat could’ attain only ‘bushels per acre as a maximum and went down to 34.6’ bushels per acre, its lowest yield in seven years in 1916, when its other rival’ went only ‘15.4 bushels to the a cre, “About 100 varieties of wheat, oats and barley grown in triplicate fields arid checked by a well known stand- ard variety furnish a day’s observa- |' tion schedule alone. from seed !gathered from tie corn- ers of the earth is another valuable project.
