EXTENSION OF DRAFT AGE IS OPPOSED is (Continued From F From Page One.) ar sent there are enough men in 88 oné sufficient for our prospec- tive needs and when the enlarged program of the United States is ready for presentation to congress we will at the same time have complete data on which to base any recommendation for change in the age limits of the draft.” After the conference with Secretary Baker and his aides the military com- mittee decided to follow their rec- othmendation and to, oppose any legis- lation at this time changing the draft | age limits. In ‘asking that the draft legislation go over for the present, Secretary Ba- ker and General March said that with- dn sixty or ninety days, probably a‘ out’the middle of August. after the Proposed recess of congress, the ad- ministration will submit a new com- prehensive army program, covering not only the number of men it,is pro- posed to raise but also dealing with shipping and other problems. Chairman Chamberlain prepared to make a statement to the senate in connection with the amendments to the pending army appropriation bill of Senators Fall of New Mexico and Hitchcock of Nebraska, which respect- ‘ely proposed making the age limits 18 to 40 years instead of 21 to. 31. When the war department's en- larged program is su2mitted members said the committee ,which virtually isa unit in favor later of extending the draft age limits, also plans to pre- scribe by legislation regulations re- garding the classes of men who shall work or fight.” Such regulations it was ‘said, prob- ably would extend the “work or fight” principle. Secretary Baker, General March and General Crowder, it was stated, all op- posed the amendment. by Senator Johnson of California, proposing that in future draft calls, states which al- ready have furnished by voluntarily enlistments an excess over their quo- tas, shall be given credit for such ex- cess. Senator Johnson was satisfied with the statement that the present system without credits.is fairest and planned’ not to press his amendment.
