'$ ~~ SP: CR ENE Ne = Japs May Ban SATURDAY, JUNE 15, 1918. American Tobacco From the Orient 4 Washington, June 15.—Investigation by the state department of reports that China is about to close her doors to American’ tobacco shipments was asked of Secretary Lansing today by \southern senators. The senators told the secretary that they. had heard control of the Chinese tobacco market was to be turned over to. Japan through negotiations in Ja- pan of a Chinese loan. Inquiries de velopes that the reports are true. The senaiors asked that a protest be made. American tobacco interests, the sen- ators say, do a $30,000,000 tobacco bus: iness annually with china. Counter Revolutionists Are Again Successful ndon, June 15.—The/ Czecho-Slo- troops operating ~ against” the Russian government in Siberia and the Ural region continued their suc- cess, according. to an exchange tele- graph dispatch. from Moscow dated June 11. During the ninth and tenth of June, having occupied Samara, they advanced rapidly toward. Ouffa. \ On the Siberian railroad from Tch- eliabinsk to Tomsk .(a distance of 1,- 250. miles) all the towns are in the hands of the Czecho-Slovaks. (More than thrge hundred arrests already have been made by the Soviet government in connection with the anti-Soviet plot. Among those under arrest are M. Kiskin, minister of pub- lic welfare in the Kerensky cabinet, and M. Malyantovitch, minister. of ‘jus- tice.in the Kerensky cabinet and many |’ other social @emocrat ‘and social revo- Jutionist leaders. Partial disclosures made ‘by. the So- viet government. allégé that.the coun- ter revolutionary headquarters in Mos- cow has eXtended ‘its organization throughout Siberia and central Rus- sia’ under the name of “Union for De- fence of the Fatherland and of Free- dom.” The organization is accused of plan- ning the overthrow of the Soviets and the establishment of a government -ftanding ‘for the national interest: of ‘Russia, reorganization of the arm: the old basis; and continuation ofthe war against. Gerniany wit hthe sup- port of the allies. — 3 The organization ‘is said. to have consisted: chiefly of former officers disguised in shabby clothes, disguisea as bagmen. and-laborers. The advent of the large contingents, of Czecho-Slovaks in the far East is noted in a Times dispatch from Pek- ing, dated June 10'as having brought a new factor into the situation there. Two divisions of these troops, the correspondent says are now scattered along the Siberian railroad from Tche liabinsk eastward, on their way to Vladivostock, , while about. 14,000 of them have arrived at Vladivostock. Their presence at this port is causing irritation to the local Bolsheviki, who are anxious for the immediate ship- ment of these“troops overseas. Meanwhile General Semanoff, the anti-Bolshevik leader in Siberia does not find his‘affairs prospering, accord- ing to these advices, which report that he has been obliged to retire to Daur- ktia, while the force comprised of former prisoners of war opposing him is, increasing. “ -“On the other hand,” continues the correspondent, ‘public feeling’ every- where i Spe ria is’ hot against the Bolshevil ment, which alone has supplies of atms.and ammunition, making action against them a diffi- cult matter. * “The universal cry of Siberia is for the assistance of én—allied force around which all the moderates can rally. e is “A small force of Cossacks and oth- ers commanded by Admiral Kolchak is opposing the “Bilsheviki on the, east-| (certain mortgage ern Manchurian border near Vladivos- tock. The Bolsheviki are threaten- ing to blow up the immense stores of ammunition: in Vladivostok if. Admir- al Kolchak attacks them.” u Cpe tae hg: j NOTICE OF SCHOOL MEETING.
