Signal Corps. Referring to his department of the service as ‘the branch that will bring the kaiser to time,” Private Thomas M. Jennings of Bismarck writes the following interesting letter from the Aviation ranch camp in Virginia: une: I'am writing to you with the idea that there might be some one in Bis- marck that would like to hear from a .Bismarck boy that is in the avia- tion station of the signal corps, the branch that is going to bring the central powers to terms. I'am in an aero construction squad- yon, We are building roads and dig- ging sewer ditches at present. All the buildings are built by con- tract here. But when we get to France we will have a chance to work at our trades, we: expect. All the drilling we have had so far is; just enough so they can, manage ug:in a military manner. dt may be nice to be in a company ofome boys. But 1 have found it nice to be in a company: of boys trom all parts. of the good old United States, It-4s fun to get some joke on some fellow, because he is from some state that has ways of its own. {North Dakota is, represented. by two, both of us from Bismarck or near it. Clarence Christianson is the other and his address is Baldwin. At present I am working in the of- fipers’ mess hall as. assistant cook. [ get every other day off to myself, and twenty-five cents extra a day from the officers. We all expect to see France within the next few weeks, and we all would like to get there as fast as they can send us there. The more [ see of the other states, the better I think of North Dakota. At least since I left Jefferson Barrack to go:to Texas and from Texas here. Vir- ginia has Texas heat but not North Dakota. Virginia is having the coldest winter in forty years I am told. Mud,! snow, rain and near zero weather all in the same week. ;One of the scarcest things in New- pert News, which is seven miles from. here is water. Due to the war. Army camps have ‘been put on the same mains. Water cannot be drawn on the second floors, I am told. Christmas vacations have been extended in the schools of Newport and Norfolk be-| cause of the shortage of coal. Well I will close hoping to be able to write from.a distant land next time. Priv.
