By Blosser WS WHAT'S BURNING *¢ MARKET CONTINUES INDEFINITE TREND Times but Always Followed by Reaction. CALL LOANS GO UP TO SIX PER CENT New Yi Jan. 15.—On a progres- sive contraction of business today’s stock market consistently pursued its indefinite trend of the last fortnight. Early irregularity gave way to mod- erate strength, this in turn being suc- ceeded by another reaction in the later trading, with an irregular rally just before the close. ‘Suggestions that the first day of the week be made a holiday in eastern ter- ritory, pending adjustment of the ex- isting economic strain( excited little attention at first, but probably ex- erted a sentimental influence later. An advance in call loans to six per cent also served to restrain specula- tive ardor. The rise was ascribed to} a sudden inguiry due to final pay- ment on the second liberty loan. Inci- dentally, second liberty 4's fell to al aaa low record. | News of the day threw little light on the foreign situation but rumor again dealt with the dividend status of certain industrials the cut in the Willy's Overland dividend accounted for the advance of the motor division, but other equipments and specialties were lower most of the day. if United States Steel fluctuated with- in a radius of 2 points but closed vir- tually unchanged at 90, contributing fully one third of the day’s operations. Rails averaged one poin recessions, with partial recoveries. : The few issues of strength were represented by shiping crucible steel,! Mexicans and several of the less ac-; tive miscellaneous issues. Sales am- ounted to 485,000 shares. In the general bond list heaviness ruled both as to rails and industrials. Liberty 344’s were quoted at 98.58 to 98.50 first 4’s at 97.58 to 97.40 and sec- ond 4’s at 96.44 to the new minimum | of 966.14. Total sales (par value) ag- gregated $4,475,000. The fact, however, that the contract stock of corn here has been exhausted led to a transient upturn in the aJnuary deliv , Which sold at within 3c of the maximum limit allowed. | In oats nothing was heard of any seaboard inquiry, and selling was bas. ed largely on the fact that Illinois; railroads seemed in a fair way to clear} up congestion.
