BIG PACKERS CONTROLLING RETAIL TRADE SAYS WITNESS Boston, Mass., Dec. 28.—The con- trol by the big Chicago packers of the rendering business throughout the country was emphasized at the federal trade commission’s inquiry into the meat supply which was continued here today. John Gelliane, witness at the federal trade commission hearing, charged to- day that packers were establishing meat stores in various cities for the purpose of driving retailers out of business. The Mohican company, which operates a chain of stores in ‘New England, was one of these con- cerns, he said. The packers set retail prices at these stores so low that independent stores could not compete, and many went out of business. FIELD MARSHAL HAIG MENTIONS AMERICANS IN ROLL OF HONOR London, Dec. 28—Field Mar- shal Haig, the British commander- in-chief, has submitted a list of names of persons serving on the western front, as deserving spe- cial mention. The list, which was published today in the London Ga- zette, contains the names of many Americans attached to the Amer- ican army nursing corps. For six years he was on the faculty of the Valley City state normal, and for four years he was an instructor at the University of Hlinois, where he took his Ph.
