Dated---this- 44th day of Octobér. | 1917. WILLIAM J. WHITE, Administrator. First publication on the 17th day of October, 1917. 10—17, 24, 31; 11—17 TIMELY SUGGESTIONS FOR HALLOWE'EN FEATS oy By BIDDY BYE. Tho last night of October is a holi- day dear to the heart of youth. Other holidays are attended with much grown-up pomp and ceremony which is apt to include speechmaking and good clothes, and company manners, and all that but Hallowe’en!—ah!— Hallowe'en is different. It is gay, mysterious, grotesque, unconventional, hilarious—dedicated by staid old cus- tom to young life, liberty and the pur- suit—and capture—of happiness! In the beginning Hallowe'en had a semi-religious significance. On October 31 the Druid priests who worshipped the Sun God by keep- ing eternal fires burning upon great stone altars, put on their white robes and gathered about their altars, the people standing near. At a signal the altar fires were extinguished, sym- bolic of the completed year of the crops. As Christianity overcame the pagan faith the festival lost its first signifi- cance. Folk came to believe that October 31 was a time especially propitious for the interference of fairies and spirits in human affairs. The joyous Hallowe'en pranks of demons, witches and gnomes are em- bodied in every variety of classic art. The most modern art form of buffoon- ery is the witch and demon ballet as produced by Pavlowa. Typical group- ings posed by Pavlowa’s company are printed today. Hallowe'en parties are particularly; suited to the informal frolic, where the mystical creatures of darkness can be consulted as to the future, par-! ticularly the matrimonial future of lads and lassies. Hallowe'en fun is not complete with- out the magical Hallowe'en gpple the narings of which, if thrown over the left shoulder as the clock strikes the hour of 12, will form the initial of the | future bride or groom of the person most interested. The hostess will plan a full eve- ning of games and contests, reserving the services of a good fortune teller 3rd & Main Streets. Corner of ‘OHN BCRTELL Sheet Metal and Radiator Work: for late in the evening and serving supper between 11 and midnight— with a gogg spook to enter, just as the clock chimes: midnight—to predict in a nonsense rhyme—great-matrimon- ial luck for all present.
