Baer, Townley’s candidate for congress in the First: “It is no time to make Americanism an issuc.” On the platform af the Auditorium where Senator La’ Follette last weel decried America’s entry into the war on what he termed a violation of “tec‘inical right,” Colonel Roosevelt ‘“tassing the Wisconsin senator among the “Huns within our gates’ this af- ternoon declared he would like to send La Follette and his “shadow Huns” to Germany as “free gifts to the kaiser.” Among the shadow Huns the colonel included Senator Gron- na of North Dakota and Representa- tive Lundeen of ‘Minnesota. “Enemy of Democracy.” ‘The most sinister enemy of democ- racy in the United States is Senator La_Follette.’ The ‘colonel had been given a tran- script of Senator La Follette’s speech ‘before the producers’ and consumers’ conterence held here last week under the auspices of the Nonpartisan league. “I have not had time to read | it all,” he said, “but I have already foun dtwo or three gems.” ,, Senator La Follette’s assertion that ‘America’s participation in the war was due to American citizens being pass- engers on “a ship loaded with muni- tions for Great britain,’ was declared ‘by the colonel to be a falsehood, and ‘he knows it was a falschood,’ he ad- ded. “T abhor Germany. I abhor the: Hun without our gates, but more I abhor the Hun within our gates. And I say that any man who excuses and con- dones such infamy, and his ‘shadow Huns,’ Gronna und Lundeen, do aot represent the American people. The are on a level with Vallandingham whom Lincoln sent beyond the Con- ~federate line: I wish | could send them to Germany as a free gift to the kaiser. La Follette is out of place in the senate. Attack on Baer, ‘The colonel algo paid his respects to Congressman Baer of North Da- kota. “I see it reported in the papers,” he said, “that the candidate of the league, successful candidate for con- gress on June 27, made this statement, ‘it is no time to make Americanism an issue.’ That would de all correct a3 a statement of a successful candi- date for the German reichstag, but the man who can make such a state- ment has no right to be admitted to the American congress. “If Americanism is not now an issue then it never can and never will be an issue ,and the public servant who does not admit that it is an issue and doesn’t take the right view of the issue, hasn't any business to live here in the United States.” Blames Nonpartisan League. Referring to the Nonpartisan league the colonel said: “And now, friends,” he said, ‘I wish to state the real grief it was to me to be forted to realize, most reluctantly, the kind of doctrine for which that so- called Nonpartisan league was willing to stand as it showed by the way some of its members cheered the sen- timents and utterances of Senator La Follette. I had at the time of the in- ception of the league felt a great sympathy for most of its purposes and some of its meihods. There were some of its methods which I could not approve, becausé I felt it was building up a boss system, a machine as bad as the worst of those of the old par- ties where they have been worse and PORE CLOGGING lfm A BLACKHEADS Easily Prevented by Prices f. 0. b.
