Knickerbockers Defeated New York Cities in Four-Inning Contest, June 14, 1846—First to Formulate Playing Rules. Several cities have claimed the honor as the birthplace of baseball. Boston says that a game called “New England” was the forerunner of the game as it is known today. Philadel- phia says no, “town ball” is: the parent of baseball, The latter game, it is sald, was played by an organized club, the Olympics, as far back as 1833, The early game of “rounders” was an earlier phase of the same game. The real home of baseball, when all is said and done, is—hold on a minute —Hoboken, N, J. It was there that, 71 years ago, the first bona fide baseball game between clubs was played. The contenders were the Knickerbockers and the New York Cities, and the game was played on the Elysian fields, near Jersey City. That was on June 14, 1846. The Ely- stan ficlds are now the site of Hobo- ken, The Knickerbockers were organ- ized in New York in September, 1845, They were the first to formulate play- ing rules, The New Yorks organized a Httle later and adopted the same code. Both of those clubs played several games with scrub teams picked from among the spectators before they faced each other on that June day in 1846. Under the rules that obtained at that time, the first team to make 21 runs was the victor, The game lasted four innings, the Knickerbockers win- ing, but history does not record the score of their opponents, The Knickerbockers found thelr first real rivals in the Gothams, organ- zed in 1850, and the Greenpoint Eck- fords and the Morrtsania Untons, ‘or- ganized in 1855, The Olympics of Philadelphia eatly adopted the ‘New York. game, and the Athletics, Key- stones and Quaker Citys later’ fought for supremacy, while in Boston the Olympics were organized in 1854, and a little later the Elm Trees disputed honors with the pioneers. But heavens! Just think, of it! Twenty-one runs in four innings. The fact that Ty Cobb has quit play- ing golf for-the summer may have something to do with his remarkable winning streak, e e Matty McIntyre, former Detroit star and late manager of the Mobile team, is now playing ball with a team in'a Detroit factory league. eee Happy Felsch, who is playing center field for the White Sox, has developed into a high-class player. He is one of Rowland’s best hitters. se @ Third Baseman Baird is making good with the Cardinals. He couldn’t hit “| when he played with the Pirates, but now he is killing the ball. sé & Pitcher Ear! Llamilton of the Browns got away to a poor start this season. He has failed to come home a winner in fourteen starts. s#e Miller Huggins has been cleaning house and trimmiyg his sails to make room for-a lot of new players who een, _ twit: Lot thirty- NOTICE AND CITATION, HEARING OF FINAL ACCOUNT AND Dis- TRIBUTION OF ESTATE, State of North Dakota, county of Burleigh.
