Insure with U.S. = BIG Fy RE LOS How Well are You Protected from Losses of This Kind? 21 CARS BURA IN 50000 FRE (Continued from page one) due the flames at their ‘source, the saving of adjoining property became the prime object. The Bismarck Business college’s three-story building loomed only 30 feet to the west and directly in the path of the wind-swept flames an en- ticing target for the fire god. Sev- eral times the big building broke out in various spots, but not only did the firemen succeed in reducing the dam- age to this structure to a negligible sum, ‘but they saved the walls and much of the interior of the Hoaglund frame structure, between the business college and the garage. At no time was the Finch Lumber company’s property seriously threatened, but to guard against a possible shift of the wind, the roofs and lumber piles were kept thoroughly drenched. The.saving of the Hoaglund build- ing was little short of a miracle, and had this structure gone there would have been little chance of saving the business college. From the dormitories of the latter students in every form of negligee and disarray poured into the street, some clutching class books, and others personal belongings more dear to them. Trunks were hustled out through doors and windows and the building was quickly emptied. Spears Lose AJl. W. H. Spears and daughter, who building, lost practically. all of, their, personal belongings.: Miss Althea. Spear recently returned from.Grand Forks, where she is a student at the university, was forced to escape in her night robes and to borrow cloth- ing of lightly-clad women in the crowd of spectators with which to make her way to the home of friends. Only One Injury. Although some of the firemen took dangerous hazards, /the only injury re- ported today is that of Fire Commis- sioner Bertsch. While his face is bad- ly scorched, his eyes do not seem to have been affected, and the curing of his burns will only be a matter of time. scene of the blaze was thronged with people, row upon row of picturesquely clad onlookers, who welcomed the warmth on bodies not over-thi dressed. Many in the crowd had cars in the garage, and were especially in- terested in the display. Goddard in Minnesota. H. P. Goddard, president of the Da- kota Motor Co., is in Minnesota enjoy- ing a vacation at the lakes. He was wired ‘for and is expected to return today for a.conference with State Fire Marshal Reade with a view to deter- mining, if possible, the cause of the blaze. F. A. Copelin of, the Dakota company could volunteer no informa- tion today. He was of the opinion, however, that the fire had started from, a cigar stub or match carelessly thrown into' litter at the rear of the pbuilding by''some lounger. He was not prepared to estimate the loss, but believed the company’s hazard to be fully covered by insurance, most of which is carried by the H. T. Murphy agency. Anat MARARIAN Other Fires. Last night’s alarm was the fourth to which the Bismarck fire depart- ment had responded to within 48 hours, Saturday the department was called out to extinguish a blazing pea- nut wagon near the Northwest hotel and to put out a fire in some rubbish street. Sunday afternoon, between 3 and 4 o'clock, the boys were called to the Harry ‘Sims home, 413 Second street, to find a barn in flames. Only the frame of the building could. be saved, but the fire was prevented from Miss Ada Belle Sims. proved herself a heroine by assisting Louis Larson in saving three horses from the burn- ing barn. Miss Sims led out one and Mr. Larson another. The third, an animal so wild that everyone feared to approach it, was freed by Miss Sims’ sawing through its halter rope with a knife, when the liberated ani- mal dashed from the barn of its own accord. Several sets of harness and a de- livery wagon owned by Brown & Jones were consumed. The structure destroyed last night was Bismarck’s first. pretentious amusement house—the Anthenaeum. It was erected in 1883, when the roll- er-skating craze first struck this sec- tion, and from that time until the municipal auditorium was completed, several years ago, it was variously used as a skating rink, an armory and a theater. Many of America’s foremost stars of the olden days had trod its boards, and it was the scene of many a merry gathering in terri- torial and early statehood times. The building was the property of Col. C. B. Little, the contents and equipment being owned by the Dakota Motor Co. , A total of $25,000 on build- ing and: contents was carried by the Henry T. Murphy agency. FIRE INSURANCE As an Investment Gives Aid When Most Needed.
