CANADA SHIPS MUCH PAPER Great Increase In Consumption of Wood Pulp Causing Concern Among Conservationists. A great increase in the exports of paper from Canada to the United States is causing concern among con: servationists of the dominion, Uncle Sam is inforzied, as it is feared that the drain upon Canadian wood-pulp re- sources Will result seriously to the do- minion, It is pointed out that the drain is likely to increase rather than diminish, in view of the rapid deple- tion of accessible supplies of tiinber suitable for pulp wood in the United States. That Canada is making big progress toward becoming the world’s center for the manufaciure of pulp and paper, it {g declared, is indicated by the fact that for the year ending with July, 1916, the exports of paper amounted to $21,678,868, of which 88 per cent went to the United States. and 5.2 per cent \to the United Kingdom, This was 2 increase of 31 per cent over the figu trent of p: in 1 iz to a total o the yer ne total exports fc were but $24,009 and for 1913 ouly $6, 827.000.
