The new stamp for Christopher and Nevis, two Leeward isles in the West Indies discovered by Christopher Co- Jumbus in 1493 and now British pos- gessions, shows the discoverer look- ing through a new spy-glass, remarks the London Daily Mail. The “Bulletin” of the French Astro- nomical society expresses indignation at what it terms this latest example of the general ignorance of matters astronomical, for, of course, Christo- pher Columbus died more than a cen- tury before Zachariah Haussen, maker of spectacles, made some one else’s fortune by devising the telescope. His children, playing with some of his lenses, had found that when_ two lenses were placed at & certain dis- tance apart the weathercock, away on the top. of the mneighboring church steeple,-cayld he seen through them as y as ' if it had been brought ALFALFA IS 600D FOR SHEEP Excéllent Feed for Either Breeding om ‘Fattening Animals—Finer Cuts i Are Best. T, Carlson. Lelz-4 SHORT SHAFTS %[ ‘ To be afraid of public opinlon does tot mean that one esteems fit. Make a man belleve he’s of no con- tequence and that's what he'll be. Why is there no bronze tablet to ‘he person who invented the tly swat- | jter? Dame fortune may knock on the door, but opportunity knocks on more doors. ‘When one gets the altrulstic hunch he looks around for someone to prace tice on. Courage only is needed to start something that milllons may be wait- ing for. A well-trained memory is one that uever presents us with a disagreeahle dream. When. poverty knocks at the door love goes out to dinner with another man. Deliberation Is conservatism enough In a good many cases. “You've got to show me.” The bridegroom Is the article that Is thought about after Yhe trousscau Is ‘ompleted. The potato cannot understand why roses are so popnlar, since they can- not be eaten. No drought is severe enough for anyone to be willing to have it ended by a tornado. Nearly every law of health is easy to follow except taking exercise; and that’s a nuisance. Hoping for the best is a lazy man's idea. Those who get the best are busier than that. Most governments are poorly con- ducted because the voters are busy at something elge. After a man puts his shoulder to the wheel where there is trouble, he stops criticising. ¢ Times are good when a phonograph sels for, as much as a washing ma- chine at a farm vendue, Falling in love at first sight is all right if you are insured against the consequences of the second. MIéSED “REMNANTS” OF BAND Drummer Clearly Had Quite Compre. hensive Idea of His Importance to Musical Organization. A certain town In Ohlo boasts a full brass band, Including a big dfum. The drummer Is a chap of about five feet in height and rather deaf, but he thinks highly of his importance to the band. On occasions when the band parades, it fnvariably takes the same course through the main street; but one day the leader, for some purpose known only to himself, turned down a by- street. The little drummer did not perceive what was happening in front of him, for to compensate his lack of height he holds the drum high bee fore him. So with his gaze concene trated on his musie, he; banged away,’ and. marched Htraight hhead, as tsual,. About five minutes later he finished ms part,'snd“hearing no other fustru- ments, he stopped. ‘Part ot the crowd had accompanied him, and they gave | hitn a! cheer. But-he was 1ll at ease. He shovéil’his dfum to one side and’ gazed ahead; ‘then on the other, and did likewise. But he saw no band. Then in uneasy astonishment, he turned to the smiling bystanders and inquired : “Say! Have any of you seen the remnants of a band anywheres about here?"—Philadelphia Ledger. oats Best fo ws.
