Experiments made last summer in Europe show that the amount of radi- ation recelved from the sun on the surface of the earth in a clear day is greater with a dark blue than with a light blue sky. In the latter case there is a higher tension of the water vapor in the air. It I8 suggested that some Instrument capable of measuring accurately the Intensity of the blue of the sky would be useful in observa- tions on the varlable transmission of the sun's heat through the atmow ohere. SAWFISH LOST TO AQUARIUM Miami Beach Officials Had a Prize, but the Nine Specimens Died in Short Order, The officials of the aquarium at Miami Beach a short time ago en- deavored to secure f a big net a por- poise to see if it could be kept alive in an outdoor tank, and when hauling it in were surprised to find that a saw- fish had become entagled. A success- ful effort was made to bring this spec- imen in alive, and it was placed in the 36-foot tank inside of the aqua- rium. N 1t was tempted with different varie- ties of its natural food, but it would not eat or move around in the tank, excepting perhaps ‘once in 24 hours it would move a few feet but always along the bottom. Four days after It was placed In the tank it gave birth to nine young, each about one foot long, six inches of which was saw, and nature had provided that each little saw was inclosed in a glutinous veil, thus protecting the mother and the other offspring from the saws. At the end of three weeks the moth- er died, either from starvation or a broken heart, but the little fellows, knowing nothing else, began to eat what was offered, Itttle shreds of spiny lobster and cut up mullets, thriving and growing very nicely, not belng in- terfered with by the other fish, and taking a good deal of exercise swim- ming the length of the tank, generally near the floor. After three months, during which time they had grown to a little more than two feet In length, they were attacked by some sort of parasite and one by one died. Stones Once Used in Casting Lots. The custom of deciding doubtful questions by lot Is one of great extent and high antiquity, recommending it- pelf as a sort of appeal to the Almigh- ty, secure from all Influence of pas- slon or bias. It also Is a sort of divl- nation sald to be employed even by the gods themselves. In the primitive method of custing lots stones were often used. These, marked In some way, were placed In the fold of a garment or more often an urn, helmet or a vessel of some sort. The shaking of the garment or vessel would throw a stone out on the ground, according to which the decislon was glven. The lot was used to determine such cases as the inheritance of the tribes, hence each tribe's portion was called “the lot of its Inheritance.” A mode of divination among heath- ens was by means of arrows, two In- scribed and one without mark, Work of Telegraphers. According to the results of a special study among telegraph operators, gov- ernment Investigators have deter- mined that each operator has a tele- graphic language of his own, differing from the typical form, although all can, of course, understand one anoth- er. The greatest number of words known to have been sent in one min- ute by the Morse code, Is 49. The average sending rate a minute {s from 20 to 24 words of four letters each. Skiliful operators can usually recelve faster than they can send, but with beginners the case Is reversed.—Wash- ington Star.
