Casson, in Forbes Magazine. Salabiilty is an element of value. This is a truth that will make you more money when you sell, and save you more money when you buy. s There should be a discount of at least 20 per cent on any shares or properties that cannot be sold quickly. Practically every man with money makes this mistake at times—he buys what he cannot sell. Always in buying, there are several facts to bear in mind: 1. You may change your mind. The house that pleases you today may displease you tomorrow or displease your wife, which is still more likely and serious, 2. Price is made by demand, not by cost | or value. Price is what somebody will give for it. Last month I saw an aerodrome sold for $1,600 and a postage stamp for $5,000. ; ! 3. You mustn’t spend money on a whim, and think it is an_investment. Buy to pleage ‘yourself—yes, but not unless you’ can afford to throw away the money. 4. The more unique and abnermal a property is, the less likely you are to find a purchaser, The more ordinary and com- monplace a thing is, the greater the crowd of buyers. § § OUTSIDE SOLICITORS The town has been over run with solici- tors from the outside, selling everything from silk hose to hair nets and the sup- erintendent of schools is to be congratula- ted upon his action to bar them from an- & noying, the teachers and students in the § new high school building. Bemidji needs none of these peddlers within her gates. She has modern up-to- date stores in every line and our merch- ants are all trustworthy and dependable. So is their merchandise. The prices you pay for them is less than most places and far less than you pay for like quality in the larger cities. Most of them carry advertised lines and merchan- dise that is constantly advertised must be right or it could not be successfully mark- eted in this day and age. Our merchants pay taxes which builds - your schools, streets and other public buildings.: They support your=echurches and furnish employment to our people. they are deserving of your every consider- ation and should be patronized in prefer- ence to peddlers or out of town mail order houses. When you buy from them you see what you are getting and know that your money stays at home as it should, so that your city may grow and prosper. —1 “What’s become of all the talk about a new tourist park for Baudette?” - asks Billy Noonan in-his paper. From the way they were shouting this summer, we thought the park was already filled®with tourists. s § § Both Shipstead and Anna Dickey can see victory ahead. It beats all how early in life some people’s eyes are effected. & 4 : Fords took another drop of fifty dollars, POTATOES FOR THE HOME The Civic and Commerce Association is ]a.unchmg a plan which may help farmers dlSpVOSe of some of their potatoes for cash at fifty cents a bushel. The ‘plan is to secure orders from our 1,400 homes for their winter’s supply at fifty cents a bushel and turn the orders ov- er to the county agent’s office’ to place with farmers for prompt delivery. The plan advocated is a nation wide move- ment to save the potato crop and this com- munity stands ready ‘and: willing to"be“of assistance in this worthy move: . This is one project in' which’all can take part and the large majority of our citizens are more than anxious to do thejr duty. ¥ JAIL Bermuda is jailing parents for the - crimes of their children. A nine year old boy, convicted of theft; is allowed to go free. His mother pays a fine and: goes to jail for a month for permitting him to be- come a thief. This is a typical case under Bermuda’s new law, which is said to be working wonders. Compulsory creation of parental feeling* or responsibility would not be a biad thing in America. French detectives dealing with adult crimes say, “Find the Woman.” In Juvenile crimes the first rule should be “Find the parent.” N OUR GARBAGE STREWN ROADS _Complaint has been made that certain highways a short distance from the ‘city are being used for dumping grounds and t}xat barrels of garbage, tincans and .the hkg are being strewn along - the - road which is unsanitary and a disgrace to the community. R . Bemidji has provided a public‘flumpint ground and this ground should‘be used for the purposes intended. " The: practice of using our highways for ) :hguld be stopped and violators prosecu- ed. 2 A ADVERTISING RESULTS . - One of the best ways to get results from _ advertising is to run adveftising more worthy of results. Store advertiging. with more and better illustrations—store . - ad- vertisine with less and bettér copy—store advertising with bigger and better ideas— and you will not . need. to ~ worry about results when inserted in the Pioneer. WHY BANKS DON'T EAIL . In Wisconsin, where diversified farming is practiced almost universally, there has not been a bank failure in five years, =k We congratulate Harry Wheelock on his re-entry to the newspaper field at Fergus Falls. He may be able to do' many things well, but he can run a newspaper better. Cut out the politics Harry, we have plenty .otf‘Democrats roaming around the state as 1T 18, f——§ POTATOES FOR GOLF BALLS The farmers are urged to save their lit- tle potatoes and sell them to members of the golf club for winter golf. The brilliance of “num-skulls” is amazing at times. § Politicians in Lake of the Woods county are busy lining up for office. A dozen want to be sheriff, We don’t care about any of the office as long as they. _elect Taylor Judge of Probate. 3 — Bemidji is becoming a perfect city in many respects, but there is still room for improvements. If recomendations were in order our telegraph service might be in- cluded as one of them, y : — Eat ‘more potatoes-and gét some meat on-your-ribs. Yes we have decided to start right in.
