COINING REAL MONEY .\ By William M. Sweets (United Press Staft Correspondent) London, July 13, AUnited Press) —_Silver coims-to the amout of 5,- 000,000 roubles have been minted by the Russian government in the Petrograd minut, according to the Moscow correspondent of the Riga- sche (Riga) Rundschau, The minting was bpegun Septem- I ber first, last, and the coins are gf 10, 15, 20 and 25 kopeks and one rouble. They are 90 per cent silver and '10 per cent alloy. The _currency .is not to go into circulation, however, but is to form the security for a new note issue, which may eventually supersede the old one. The coins, according to the correspondent, greatly. resemble the old Tsarist coins, except that they bear a Soviet inscription, “Amazing as it may seem,” the correspondent writes, ‘“an improve- ment in the currency conditions of Soviet Russia may be noted in the ‘last month, chiefly caused by the cessation of paper money issues. B.| The: measures taken by the Govern- ‘ment with a view to stablizing the currency could almost be called brutal. i “Meanwhile the roublels |rate rises, Food and commodities are cheaper—bread,. black and white by about 40 per cent. Everywhere there is' the greatest money shortage. ‘Wages can no longer be paid and many of the chief industrial enter- prises are unable to meet their fin- ancial undertakings.” The Moscow bourse during and “following the Genoa conference was the scene of a feverish activity, he states, Debentures and shares re- cently without any real value sud- denly attained surprising heights. The Russian Rente (1000 roubles) is now quoting at 90 million roubles. Napthn and railway shares are also in great demand. The State Bank also is foreign currency but does little business as the rates in the free matket are considerably higher, PINEWOOD Miss Julia Lien came herc to visit | friends and relatives. Carl .
