E. strong, business manager of The ‘Coconino Bun (thsufl,'An:onn) became weary of Flagstaff business men lendmg out-of-town for their. print- jng—j as every other publmher and prititer has wearied of the same practice in his own town. Mr. gtronz, however didn’t. twiddle his. thmubs and take it out in wailing and begging for business. Nope! The Coconino Sun, when it had become en- tirely' “fed‘up” with the local printing situation is- sued“d jpretty hot little four-page folder and mailed it to the merchants and others who were “falling for” the out-of-town printing salesmen’s blarney. That you may not have to guess at the temper of The Sun’s remarks, the following is an excerpt from the folder. (The first paragraph refers to a full pn¢a ad printed by The Sun setting forth its views on the matter of keeping home printing at home) : o Mr. Flagstaff Busines§ Man? = S oo You saw and read The Sun’s s own {full page ad in The Sun last week. Wi ‘couldn’t tell thé public-what we‘and: you knaw is'true, that when you send your Dusiness out § of town,:you save thereby—if you save anything at ally which you usually do not—no more than they. have’'when’ they order by mail from your mail-order house or big-town: competitors. ‘We couldn’t tell’ them that you, whose business we. consistently try in our news and. editorials to protéct from out-of-town competition are undeserv- ing of that protection because you do.not practice what' ydu preach; that you' don’t even play fair with the newspaper' that has: always helped you and iu.qlluya mlflybto‘help you in that preaching. Suppose’ you do Sometimes save a few cents by sending out-of-town for printing. X Does the ‘out-pf-town printer print columns of argument every year, free of charge, and circulate it .among your elutomeru asking them to deal at home? We-do. Does the out-of-town printer spend any of the money - he gets from you in buying merchandise or services from you?' We do. Does the out-of-town merchant send literature broadcast each week advertising the home, climate, l acenic and other advantages of this town 'you have Yyour. money invested in?. We.do. - es the out-of- town printer print the fnews lbnui ?ou, your. Lamily, y ur church, your social crowd /and. its doings, hlnding t gratis the many kind ‘words about you, your-prominence and success; and all-that. which any man who is properly constituted has” vanity enough ' 'to enjoy, even if he hasn't enough of the co-operative spirit to appreciate? We do. . We're houxting, boasting, booming your town . and you, all the' time. ‘Many of you ‘have come to us to get us,to exploit pet, ideas:of yours, gra of course, for it was news oF ¢ditorial matter that m yould 't bug\ nol@yw. but willingly gave vou: A,ud u Pu-n:,t)nis Hor it is something mei- public—scores of times wi have ly, refused the Tequests made by: indignant: readers that we slam into some’ particuldr ‘class"ainohg’ you and roast you for thie high price: | you_were getting. We refused, not because we were afraid of .your displeasure, but because we didn’t want to injure:: the business interests of our -town and because we suppose,-as it is your money. you have invested in your business, that you prefer to run your busi- nesy ‘to ‘suit yourself and without our help. “ Are you willing to co-operate' asfully as you can with this organization-—which means more to your own pusiitess ‘and welfare and best interests than any other here? “Note:—Often we're asked to ‘quote on IM of some blank or other; then ‘you compare our prices with the per M price you have been getting in 10 or 20:M lots elsewhere, to our detriment.
