MIRRORS OF WASHING'I'ON 4 - The above is the title of a recent book by an annonymous author, and consists of brief write-ups' of the prominent men at the nation’s capitol today. - One can hardly resist the feeling that the! author * ia Dbit pessimistic if noy cynical and we sincerely hape that his estimate of the men who steer: t.he “ghip of State” is not entirely correct. He sees in President Harding a ‘“good fellow,” @ man of wonderful tact, possessing “political ad- goitness,” having a keen sense of responsibility, but lacking mentality. = “Mr. Harding,” he says, “has the advaatage-of knowing his limitations, and out of the desire to reinforce himself- he has bfought together the strongest cabinet ‘Washing- ton bas seen in a generation.” He sees in the president a democratic passion for equality and reminds the nation that he s | “just folks,” but this again alarms the author, for he fears that Mr., Harding will some ‘day betray, #0.fer as to address his secretary of nnh as “cml‘x ”» He gees in Mr. Hughes the brains of the admin- wt_xahon, whose “head, like a book of etiquette, is full 'of don’ts—diplomatic don’ts—all deduced from Mr. Wilson’s experience.” M. Hoover, to the author, is & man ot small genius. for government, but a fine personal adver- tiserys Bcnry Cabot Lodge, the *scholar in pnmm," bas,for his chief characteristic “hatred for Woods Tow Wilson and & genius almost of misunderstand- ing ,gublic sentiment, and whose th:rty—five yeara of s sgrvice shows very little of constructive sums. mm!np. §27% *In somewhat similar ways he describes t!m ‘men who “are playing a role in American polxtlcs lt ! Washington. , Far be it from us to criticise a book that has at- tracted 50 much attention, but we say-again, we - eannot resist the fecling that tho brotber (who, by the way, appears to be ashamed of his non.de plume) haa written pessimistically if not cynically. There is always the tendency to idealize the past, - nnd glorify its leaders. Even the sacred writars ' bave done that. the present and discredit the leaders. One can very easily recall how men blamed Lincoln and tried 3~ discredit his administration; how dangerously near ; ‘hé came to loosing the second nomination. Yet to- zjn_y it is generally regarded that his administra- tjion marks one of the great epochs in American history. % E} ocenrs to-us that it is entirely posslble that the * pfi'esent administration has a great chance to: b’h como outstanding. Time will tell. In Mr, Hu'- difig’s passion to be “just folks”—who “boots”’it | if he should say “Charley” in his willingness to surround himself with great men in his splcndfd disposition to do team work of quality sorely nee d in govemmmml affairs. May we not find somnthmg to justify the belief— hie_may be another epoch-making administration; tnad‘xlmnsntr:tmn that will go “the second mile” in brin, "p'lg a universal peace, when men shall learn Ar more, but will beat their big guns imto plow. n}ure nnd their battleships into Fords. % §———§ ELrCTRlClTY LEADS THE PROCESSION Theé Announcement by the Minnesota Electric Light' & Power company, that it will start exten- slon wurk toward our popular summer resort gec- tiohs ns soon as weather will permit, is good n\:ws for uvcry man, woman and child in Bemidji.
