Morrell, director of the department of prisons of the buredu of commercial cconomics, was at one time the ycungest member of a baral of California outlaws and -after Ris capture he was for years regarded as one of the worst -prisoners ever brought to the San Quentin prison, but under the guidance of a new den he became head trusty and finally was pardoned, Since his release he has devoted 'himself ‘to the work of bringing about prison reforms and has been very successful. He says the present meiliod of punisiment has the effect of intensifying criminalit; He advocates. the -abolishment of prisons and the establishment of prison farms and vocational education for prison- ers.—Chicago Journal. Engine Has Three uretors. Three ca¥buretf¥ on" 6né engine presented an odd appearance at a Yrench auto show recently and was the subject of much comment. The engine, which is illustrated in - the Popular Mechanics Magazine, Is a 40 borse power and -has six cylinders. When three carburetors are fitted, two of them supply independent groups of cylinders, for high power and speed, while the third supplies all the ¢ ders at low speed, or as it is called. Thes, has an engine with six cylinders, these are divided into two groups of three, and oue carburctér feeds each group when high speed is desired, or wheun Lieavy power is needed, as in hill climb- fng.
