R. Terry (formeri Civil Service examiner), 119_Con- tinental Bldg., Washington, D. C. LICENSING ARCHITECTS PROTECTION TO PUBLIC Licensing engineers and architects s provided by laws enacted in many ites within the past two years is an importe,t factor in the protection of the public from disasters such a3 the failure of the roof of the Knicker- bocker theater in Washington, D. C. on the night of Jan. 28, 1922, when more than 110 people were killed. The failure of the roof of this thea- ter was due to a heavy snow load, but since no other large roofs in Wash- ington failed from this cause the dis- aster was evidently due to ecither faulty design or construction, which would not have existed had licensed | engineers or architects superviséd the work. . Laws licensing engineers and archi- tects who design ‘and supervise the construction of buildings have been passed in the foliowing states: Ari- zona, Colorado, Florida, Indiana, 11- linois, Iowa;—Louistana;—Michiga; Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North ‘Carolina, Oregon, Perinsylva- nia, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia, in all, 17 states. Such laws are now before the legislature of Ken- - tucky, Mississippi and South Caro- lina. There is no licensing law for thaq protection of the public in the District of Columbia. The movement for the enactment of adequate licensing. laws for the protection of the public from the activities of dabblers and quacks who formerly has only to hang out a shin- gle in order to qualify for business, has b_een actively supported by the Amencaq Association of Engineers, -an organization of 24,000 profession- al engineers. It is to the credit of profg=sxonul engineers. that they are seeking to purge the profession of in- competents and protect the public from engincers-for-a-day.
