His essay follows: | What Makes Bemidji a Good City? | The one thing above all others that makes Bemidji a good city is the qual-| ity of her citizens, their spirit of co- operation and their realization that tne prosperity of Bemidji rests not only with the citizens of the city, but with the people of the surrounding territory. | We. cannot measure the true valuc | of a city by its assessed valuation, nor by the amount of money that its merchants receive during a period of economic depression. These are but symptoms of something that is more important, the prosperity and happi- ness of the average citizen. Next in importance to the individ- ual citizen and reflecting his spirit and quality, are the different organi- zations to bring about an improve- ment of the citizens of today and to prepare the youth of today to be the citizens of tomorrow. The schools of the city are well organized and offer to the youth an opportunity that is not often excelled. The schools again reflect the spirit of Demidji’s citizens and go to strengthen the statement which was made at the beginning. The churches of the city together with the Salvation Army are well organized and administer in a worthy way. ‘Without these two organizations the § city indeed would be without much : tl.wt goes to make Bemidji a good city, yet there arc many other organi- zations that go to mMmect the social needs, as the schiools do the education- Kity al, and the churches the s i % Ar~ing these are lodges and 4 societies, the American Legion, ant various professional c'ubs.
