A. Dempster-will-he extwme\y unpopular with. beg rm'nn[; students in chemistry. He has complicated the study by addihg a few more difficult names and by upsetting a long taught theory about the “92 fuml(\mental clements” of the subject. Dr. Dempster is assistant professor of physics at the University ‘of Chi cago, and one of the leaders in orig- inal research. A positive ray analysis just com- pleted has brought out that zine, lith- ium and magnesium are not elements, but are made up of additional com- ponents. Zinc¢, Dr. Dempster found, has ' four comyonents, ;magnesium, three, and lithium, two. For more than 100 years it has been taught that these substances were funda- mental clements. In addition, Dr. Dempster claims evidence shows that all elements de- rive from some fundamental basic, which is probably hydrogen. CONTAGIOUS DISEASES _NOTHING TO MOONSHINERS (By United Press) Fergus Falls, Dec. 2.—Contagious diseases of every kind did not worry moonshiners, who are using the old detention hospital on the outskirts of Fergus Falls. The hospital had not been used for some time. Authorities found a quantity of mash and there were evidences) that a still had re- cently been removed. TRAVELS 1,200 MILES TO SECURE 12 MEN FOR-JURY Lubbock, Tex., Dec. 2.—Law vio- lators of Hocklcy county demanding a jury trial’are going to thave things easy, according to Sheriff Stroud, who has just completed the first grand jury of the newly organized cuunty. Sheriff..Straud. traveled 1,200, nu] to'secure-the 12 men. -* - It was. found after the grand )ury was impaneled that there remaincd in the county only one other man qualified to serve as a juror, hence, if indictments should -be Teturned, there zould be no petit jury to try the per- sons indicted. The grand jury was lischarged without action. Leveland, the county seat of Hock- ‘ey county, has a total populatlon of five, although it is situated in a rich farming country.
