From every corner of the land, from coun- try, town and city, comes the same report that the housing ca- pacity for our public schools is inadequate; that tens of thou- sands of pupils have no place for their studies; that teachers cannot be listed in sufficient numbers, and that school revenues are insufficient. It may be said that, in this realm of education, we have been drawing on our capital, instead of spending the annual increment only; we have been taking the teachers away from the schools, and leaving a constantly increasing deficit in our capacity to turn out that product of disciplined minds which only can be insured through exer-expanding facilities. * * * ““T wish it were possible for us to drive home to the whole § American people the conviction of needed concern for our edu- 1 cational necessities, and to get them the profession must be compensated as it de- serves. I would lift up a Macedonian call in behalf of our schools’ and colleges to men and women who feel the urge to public usefulness. More even than money and endowments, our educational establishment needs the devout, unselfish, sus- taining support of people moved by instincts of patriotism and ” o WESTERN STATES LEAD IN EDUCATION Five western states, Idaho, Montana, Utah, Washington and Wyoming, lead the nation in literacy, or, to put it another way, these five.states have less illiteracy than the other states of the Union, according to hte census figures for 1920. In each of these states illiteracy among the white population amounts to ‘'only three-tenths of one per cent. Three other western states tie for the honor of being in the second rank. o A A tenths: of one per cent. 1910 to 1920 in decreasing its illiteracy. The south, as usual, ranks highest in percentage of illteracy. o "Assessments involving penalties and special taxes of $53,- B e 1 T B A D et last fiscal year. Also property valued at $10,906,687 was con- fiscated. The total cost of enforcing prohibition as an offset to this was only $6,650,005. P OVERHEARD BY EXCHANGE EDITOR An increase of 17,387,812 bushels was shown in receipts of grain at Du- luth and Superior elevators during September, in spite of the checking up interfering with threshing.
