FRIDAY EVENING, SEPTEMBER 30, 1921 BANK ACCOUNT FOR BABY Recommended as the Surest Founda- tion That Can Be Laid for a Happy Fiiture, What are you doing for your baby's future happiness? Have you thought of opening a bank account for your baby? These are questions that should be given a thought by every parent, writes Cecella Anthony in Thrift Magazine, Many newly born babes are pre- sented with gifts in the form of money. | Why not start an account for the baby with this money and watch [t grow by making .regular weekly contribu- tions, instead of using the money to ! buy clothes or some other articles? | The weckly deposit of $1 at 4 per cent interest for ten years will amount to $638.04; in fifteen - years, $1,0° end In twenty years, $1,60 deposit of $3 | week for ten In its favor the sum of $1,914; in fif- teen years the amount will be $3,227.25 and in twenty years $5.378.75. | Of course, as the child grows older’ he or she will save the pennies, nickels and dimes, and help toward the regular weekly deposit, which will lessen the drain on the parents’ pocketboek. In time to come the child will be the sole depositor., Origin of Gas. There are a thousand uses for gas today, both in the home and factury,i and yet only a comparatively short time ago ‘the level-headed Scotchman, Sir Walter Scott, was scofting at & “madman in London who was lrylngi to make a light without a wick,” and people, thinking the gas pipes were | filled with fire, approached them with | fear, | Hunting Wild Honey. | One of the “industries” of Florida | 18 hunting “bee trees” in the swamps. A discovery which, it Is asserted, will form one of the fundamental sources for a history of the Roman empire under Augustus has been made by Dr. Oliverio, an Italan savant, in Cyrene, the ancient Greek colony of Africa, founded in the Seventh century. A London Morning Post correspondent writing from Cyrene, says that ex- cavations at Bengasi (the ancient Berenice, which stood in the midst of the gardens of the Hesperides, near the mouth of the River Lethe) have unearthed a block of marble eight feet long, one face of which bears a flaw- less Greek inscription of more than 100 lines. It is the translation of a letter from Augustus on the govern- ment and administration of justice in Cyrenaica, giving a wonderful in- sight into the financial and judicial conditions of the country at that x| time. Clear Night in Scotland. On a cloudless night one can sit by the shores of the Moray firth and read a4 newspaper at midnight, and golf, tennis and bowls have all been played while England slept. Cattle can be seen steadily grazing through the clear nights. The birds, too, appear to be a little puzzled by the unusually bright conditions. Their twittering never ceases, and occasionally one will break into song that anotber will answer.— Exchange. INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT NUMBER SEVEN, BELTRAMI CO. BEMIDJI. MINNESOTA.
