TUESDAY EVENING, SEPTEMBER 20, 1921 P THE BEMIDJi DAILY PIONEER cH LOOK AT THE NICE “HLING .CAR = ISNT" IT PRETTY? COLD IN HIGHEST ALTITUDES Why Volume of Heat Decreasts as One Leaves the Immediate Sur- face of the Earth. You would have thought that the nearer you get to the sun, the warmer the temperature becomes, wouldn’t you? But this is by no means the case, for it is much colder closer to the sun when the latter is shining its brightest than it is on' the earth. This is proved by the fact that the highest mountains, even in tropical countries, are perpetually snoy- capped. Were the air there even of the same temperature as that of the plains beneath, the snow would ) roon disappear. You know, too, that the higher an eirman flies the more warmly clad he | must be if he is not to suffer from cold. The reason for this strange phe- nomenon is that the rays of sunshine pterce through the upper layers of the atmosphere, which offer very little resistance to them. The earth, on the other hand, being more solid, cannot be penetrated so easily, with the re- sult that we get the full effect of the warmth, both as the rays strike ‘the earth and as they rebound from it. The Shortest Chapter? A London newspsper trying to tind the novel with the shortest chapter con- cluded that the prize went to Bulwer- Lytton, in whose “What Will He Do ‘With It?” the-chapter headed “Denoue- ment” consists of only one word “Poodle;” but an English critic has hastened to announce that the shortest chapters in existence are in Laurence Sterne’s “Tristram Shandy,” for in chapters 17 and 19 Sterne put noth- iug but dashes. ! Great~Portrait Painter. Gitbert Charles Stuart American portrait painter, born in Narragansett, R. I, in 1756. He be- came the protege of a Scottish paint- ar named Alexander, whom he ac- companied to Edinburgh, but was set adrift by the death of his patron, and for some years led a wandering life in London and America, till his great gift as a portrait painter was recog- nized. In 1792 he returned to Ameri- ca and painted portraits of Wash- ington, Jefferson and other noted Americans. He died in 1828 and is buried in one of the tombs in the old burying ground on Boston Common. —Indianapolls News. HUFFMAN & O’LEARY FURNITURE AND * UNDERTAKING H. N. It was founded in 1776 in the old “Raleigh Tavern” at Willlams- burg, Va., by forty-four undergradu- ates of Willlam and Mary college of whom John Marshall was one. Branches were established at Yale in 1780 and at Harvard in 1781 and today there are branches in nearly all the principal colleges and universities. The Phi Beta Kappa Is now simply “an agreeable bond of meeting among graduates.” Meetings are held at the various colleges at commencement time, when students having the high- est standing in the graduating classes are elected members. Telling Age of Trees. Trees often live to a great age, and while they are standing it is a diffi- cult matter to arrive at their age, but when they have been cut down, it s said,"the age may be reckoned by counting the number of rings visible In the section.—Ind!anapolls News.
