Gas Buggies—Things to worry about e ¢ S——————— YouR DOG SEEMS To WANT To GET . UP IN_ FRONT YOURE SITTING IN HIS REGULAR PLACE - KE ALWAYS RIDES IN THAT H i L] L4 el Mexican Love of Color. Through years of living among Americans on this side of the river, the Mexicans still cling to the old mode of dressing. Those who have come over more recently hold still more tenac- lously to the Mexican dress. The men wear big broadbrimmed sombreros, and the women still swath their heads in long filmy mantillas. Where the men have the financlal means to express themselves in dress, they often wear trousers with ‘gold braid down the outside. Bright colors are the glory of the women and girls. Young girls who have not been influenced by American ideas of dresg will almost invariably buy a violet pink dress for gala occasions and street' wear, “Son of a Gun.” The phrase, “son of a gun,” is some times explained as “Son of the Wines pot or Flagon.” There is a word “goan” which is a dialectal variety of “gawn”—gallon. Another view is that the expression was originally ap- plied to boys born on board .ship. One admiral said that he had been cradled under the breast of a gun-car- riage. It occurs in this .sense in Smyth’s “Sailor’s Word-Book” (1867). It is usually used in a deprecatory sense, How ‘Home, Sweet Home’ Was Written John Howard Payne, the author of “Home, Sweet Home,” was an Amers lean minstrel whe wandered all over the earth, practically. After the death cf his parents, when he was twelve years old, he never had a real home, and at the time of writing the song he was stranded in Paris, a foreign land, away from all the friends he held dear. He wrote the song on a dreary day in October, 1822, “Father of the Pen.” Few among the masses in the East know how to read or write, so the pro- fessional letter writer occasionally ac. quires much wealth. To an Arab & one-eyed ‘'man is a “king” among the blind, and the letter writer is the “tongue” of the king and his people. He 18 called the father of the pen, and he is reputed to possess a great many secrets. —e Line the Linoleum. ‘When purchasing linoleum for the floor it is a good idea to order a lin- ing of felt. This precaution will probably prolong the use of the lin- oleum. It also deadens sound and makes the floor warmer in winter. It prevents the linoleum from expanding or contracting and it gives a softer tread, all advantages worth consider. | ing.
