AINT 7 THE BEMIDJI DATLY PIONEER HAVE STUCK LT THE MAIN TYRONE-A DESERTED VILLAGE “Queen of the Mining Camps,” in New Mexico, Has Suffered From Copper Market Slump, Tyrone, queen of the mining camps of New Mexico, built at a cost of $3,- 000,000 and given an artistic atmos- phere through the influence of Mrs. ‘Cleveland H. Dodge, is an empty shell. A few short months ago 45 hundred men, women and children worked, lived and enjoyed life in what prob- ably is the most beautiful mining camp in the world. Now the Phelps- Dodge corporation copper mines are closed, there is no ore awaiting ship- ment, no means of livelihood remain- ing, and stores have been closed, in- habitants are leaving, the railroad has served notice that trains no longer wil} run. Within a short time only a dozen men, guards for the mines and their expensive machinery, will be left. Even the Phelps-Dodge corporation general store has closed and the en- tire stock has been shipped to Douglas. Tyrone boasts the most beautiful railroad station In the state, built by the mining corporation. Homes of miners are bungalows, not the usual shanty type of western mining camps. The camp was the pet of Mrs, Dodge, and largely- through ‘her influence a southern California plan of building was carried out. Closing of the town, however, I3 considered only a temporary measure, according to company officials, who point out that the shutdown will con- tinue just as long as the copper mar- ket remains in its present state of stagnation. Before Books Were Plentiful. The almanac and the family Bible constituted the home library 'some two hundred years ago. The weather pre- | dictions in the almanacs of 160 years ago were occasionally right, and when so proved in any locality, the fame of ~ ' the predicter was proclaimed abroad, at the corner grocerles and tavern bars of the land. To Save Mexican Forests. Newspapers of Mexico City have taken up an active campaign to-save the vast forests In the states of Puebla and Oaxaca, which, according to re- ports, are said to be suffering at the hands of the natives, who chop down and burn trees indiscriminately.
