The American raven is practically | extinet in the eastern part of our country and the variety found in America from New Brunswick to Alaska differs from that sable bird native to Europe. It is beautifully black and shining and it measures twenty-six inches in length and over a yard from tip to tip of spreading wings. The raven believes in doing 1ts work early and having it over with, consequently it builds its nest in the ! winter and lays from five to-seven | eggs which it sees to it are hatched before the end of February. “Poker”. From. the Persian, Poker is known as an American game, but it is undoubtedly an adap- tation of the Persian game “as nas.” It seems that this game came to the United States by way of New Orleans. It was in some ways similar to a game already in vogue there which was called poque, a variation'of an Itallan game or its French derivative. Our present word “poker” is a mispronun- ciation of the French term, dividing it into two syllables, “po que” and add- ing the “r,” which is sounded only in gome sections of the country. Studying Smoke. Smoke is perhaps the chief enemy of firefighters. 1t chokes and may klll. The United States bureau of standards has newly built what it calls a “smoke house,” for experiments which are expected to be of practical j usefulness: to'the fire departments of our citles. ‘It will'be used to.deter- mine exactly what is required to make “smoke masks” a safe and sure pro- tection for men engaged in subduing fires. Probably First Lottery. The first lottery of which there 1is any authentic reeord was one 'held’at Bruges in 1448 by‘some Italian mer- chants, who, possibly suffering from depression in trade and being igno- rant, of modern clearance sales and “pargain basements,” “endeavored “to dispose of their wares in this novel way. To Talk Through Telephone. Sclentific - tests show. that ‘every,| additional inch .of distance between the lips of the speaker-and the mouth- plece of the telephone is equivajent to adding 120 miles of wire: to the line over which one is talking. -The | proper distance is about one inch;*if farther than that, such sounds as *b, p, 4, t, £, 2” are transmitted poorly. If closer than one-half inch, nasal gounds like “m” and “n” do not enter the transmitter properly. —_— Poison Fish In South Seas.
