Michelet, the French naturalist and historian, says in his “Insect Life” that if all the birds were destroyed man could not live on carth more than nine years. He believed that without birds to check the ravages of insects, the insects would first destroy the growing crops of grain, next the grass and the foliage, which would leave nothing on which to feed cattle, hogs, sheep or poultry.
